The Temuka Leader. SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1890. GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Geraldine County Council must be very fond of going to law. Their latest idea is to compel the G-eraldine Road and Town Boards to collect rates for them. It does not appear to us that they have the power to do so, but if they have it is scarcely a power they ought to he in a great hurry to exercise. At the same time we think both the Geraldine boards are mistaken in the course they have adopted. It would save considerable expense if they complied with the wish of the Council and collect the rates, and all the ratepayers would profit by this economy. We trust the Geraldine boards will reconsider the matter. As regards the petition of the Geraldine and Mount Peel Ratepayers respecting the Orari Bridge, the council has not now the excuse it recently gave, namely, that the resolutions passed at Geraldine were not the voice of a representative meeting. The petitions have been signed by 154 ratepayers and that ought to. be enough to satisfy the council that the neonle are desirous of having the work done. The council, however, have postponed consideration of the matter until the result .of the Pareora Bridge lawsuit is known. From this we infer that if the council is suceeasfjjJl they will snap their fingers at tlm Geraldine petitioners and say “we will not do it,” but, it they find tbemsejves beatep, and there is no way out of it, they will make a virtue of a necessity and say, "by all means gentlemen. Of course we shall put your bridge in order. We shall see.
