Embezzlement. — A number of Informations have been sworn against Edward J. Kobinson, formerly clerk in the shipping department of the Customs at Wellington, charging him with embezzling moneys of the Government. Robinson was formerly in Wellington, but three or four months ago was removed to Ducedin. He iB belieyed to have left for Sydney, [ostructions have been cabled to the Sydney police to arr et him. Narkow Escape. —A successful test of pig iron manufacture was made at the Onehunga ironworks on Saturday afternoon. Three hundred persons witnessed the caßting of 15 tons of pig iron from the nen blai>t furnace. The iron is of good juaUty, and the manufacture promises to be a success. After the test seven gentlemen were on the lift, which is only guaranteed to hold three, and it collapsed. The brake would not grip, but it held before the ground was reached, otherwise all would have been killed. As it was Captain Anderson had the small bone of his ankle broken
Primage Duty. —At a special meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce on Monday a resolution was carried by 10 to 3 "Ihat this chamber is opposed to the reimposition of the primage duty tax on the following grounds :—(1) That experience has shown that ite incidence is unfar, seeing that in a great degree it falls upon the importer; (2) that the principle of reimposmg for fresh purposes a special tax levied for a special time and special purpose is vicious and is a breach of faith with the public ; (3) that it is opposed to the principle of economic government which the Ministry are pledged to maintain, and that if the purpose for which this proposed tax is destined cannot be otherwise served, the expenditure should be done without." Suicides —Eoaoia Newrnnt, a girl of sixleen years, committed suicide at Mtogiwhare, Auckland, on Saturday afternoon, by taking rouah-on-rats She died io jrreat agony.—A post mortem examination of Williim Wallace, found dead at Mangare, showed that the stomach was full of carbolic acid. An open verdict was returned.- A most deliberate suicide took place in o«maru last Monday when Richard Bennett, aged about 50, shot himself through ihe heart wilti a rifl\ Deceased had been for many years chief Hocountaot for Mr George Surupter, and was an old soldier and an ex-Heuteoant of volunteers, having been connec'ed with the lafcter force for maDy years. A Scotjndkel —A man was sent to Dunedin from Wellington recently todetect private stills, and failing to find one, he started one himself, employed a man nam<)d Donnelly to look after it, and wept to inform the police. Donnelly was arrested, but now the truth has come out, and the real culprit and his friend have been arrested. Donnelly did not know whit it was, and was quite innocent. Te Kooti.-Judge Connolly in Auckland some time ago give judgment to the effect that the arrest of Te Kooti a couple of years ago was illegal. The Government appealed against his decision, with the result that the Government won The effect of the judgment is that Te Kooti will either have to find sureties as ordered by Mr Bush, the Resident Magistrate at Opotiki, or go to gaol for six months.
Saltation Army, Tektjka.—The Solvation Army dentate their sixth anniversary in Temuka by a series of meetings extending from Friday to Monday night. Ensign JNewbold, A.DC, will be in command, assisted by Mrs Major Hammond. On Monday night a novelty in the shape of a "Ham and Chicken Banquet" will take plac. The proceeds are to go to the formation of a brass band in Temnk*, and all lovers of music especially are inv ted to %\ve 'heir hearty co-operation. Gerxldine and Timaru officers will be present oo Monday night. Temuka Literary Society. The regular meeting of the Temuka Literary Society was held 00 Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance, the president occupying the choir. The debate was on "Smoking," Mr J. McOiekill opening the debate in favor of the praciio*, aad Mr W: Cooper opposing. Mr McCaskill was supported by Messrs D. McCaskill, A. Russell, G. H. Mogridge, and Rutland, while Messrs Sim, J. Cooper, J. McLean, and Gillespie gave their efforts in favor of Mr Cooper's views. The subject elicited an unusual amount of interest, aod, on a po I being taken, the non-smokers were victorious by one vote. The next meeting will he devoted to essays on the military heroes of India by members of the society.
Woodbury Presbytekias Chitrch —A very successful gift auction was held in connection with the above church for the purpose of raising funds to wipe off the debt of building. There was a large quantity of produce of all kinds, also sheep, poultry, f uit and forest trees, and fancy goods to dispose of, besides contributions in money. Mr Mundell kindly gave his eervices free, in placing everything under the hammer, which he did in his usual jovial style. The ladies added much to the day's enjoyment by providing a splendid tea. The nett proceeds of the gift auction amounted to £4l, which will clear the d~bt of the church, and leave a credit in the bank. The members of the Presbyterian Church thank a'l those who so kindly contributed, especially those of other denominations.
Good Templyry.—An open meeting of the Welcome Retreat Lodge of Good Templars, G»r*ldine, w«s held on Monday evening last, Bro. W. JbJ. Birker presiding. There wis a gooi attendance. Mr B»rke r opened the meeting by delivering a spuitfd and thoroughly poetical addrpss on the privileges and duties of good temp ars in relatioc to the liquor traffic. During the evening songs were given by Missds Gibs-in, M. Dtmlop, and Andrews, and Messrs Herdman, Birker, and R. Hamrmod ; recitations were given by Miss Eakott and Mesnrs Spj'rmur aod Willoaghby, and readings by Messrs W. S. Maslin and Patrick. Mr Maslio also delivered a pithy and forcible address on the temperance question, which was much appreciated. During the evening a light but abundant coffee supper wus handed round, The night beiug co'd, a fire «as also kept burning in the grate, and a very cnmfoitab'e and pleasant social evening was spent. These open lodges are quite an institution in Geraldine, and on a winter's night the comfortib'e room, with plenty of good steaming coffee, with cakes a<i libitum, and soci 1 cht, intt-r----spersed with songs aod addresses, forms an attractive place at which to spend an hour or two.
Embezzlement. —David Hastings Browo was charged with emb zzlirg money, the property of the Bank of New Zealand, in (Jhriatctiurch last Tuesday.
