LABOR DISPUTES.
London, July 1.
The gasmen out on strike at Deeds defeated the police, and prevented five hundred blacklegs from entering the works. Many soldiers and police, and one magistrate, were stoned and seriously hurt.
July 3
In consequence of the gas strike Leeds is in darkness at night. The strikers have assumed a menacing attitude.
Two thousand telegraph operator?, when asked to cheer the Queen, hissed and groaned, ns a protest against the overwork to which they are subjected. The Mayor of Leeds prepared to read the Riot Act to the strikers'at Leeds. The mob fired several pistol shots, but was dispersed by soldiers. Two thousand coal porters at Dublin have struck owing to the dismissal of a unionist,
Wellington, July 3
The Wharf Laborers Union have declined to accept the suggestion of the Sydney Union that the entrance fee to all branches of the union throughout the colony be fixed at £5 ss. They also disapprove of the introduction of the system of the equalisation of labor.
Auckland, June 8,
At a meeting of flour-mi 1 lets sml others, it was unanimously decided to form a union, to be called the Auckland branch of the United Millers, Enginedrivers, and Mill Employes Society of New Zealand. This is consequent upon a similar movement at Tirnaru, Oamaru, and Dunedin. Mr John Bycroft, who is a master miller, was appointed president. He sajd that though be did not know how his acceptance of the office would affect his position with other employers, he was in full sympathy with any good object of the union,
Christchurch, July 2
The members of the Tailors’ Union last night decided to boy only the pro ductions of the bool factories working under union rules. A movement is on foot to form a Penmen’s Union, to include all classes of penm p n paid by salary or piecework for copying or compi ation.
