In accordance with resolution the striking of a general rate of f of a penny in the £ was confirmed. otbeseee’s ekpobt. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows I’o the Chairman. Sir, — 1 have the honor to report for the past month as ful o»s ; Tenders have been invited for; Contract No. 31, forming 40 chainsnf Main Saudi Road ; Contract No. 22, cleaning drain, Clyne’s Road, and Contract No. 23, cleaning drain, Upper Swamp Road. -The cleaning of that portion of the Canal Drain fronting Education Preserve 1211 has beep satisfactorily completed, and the work haS been pas-tad for payment.—Contract No. —, shingling at liangitata, has not been competed in a satisfactory manner, the contractor having spread the shingle before it was measured and passed,' and it is now difficult to make au accurate measurement, as the formation has b-en newly done and is of a very sandy nature. 1 have made as i ccurate measurement as possible under the circumstances. —The road to Smithfi-ld ; 'The portion of road Mr A'tken appl ed to have opened extends from the Smithfield Estate to near the north bank of the Temuka River, where it is intersected by the; priyale Hoad leading from the Kakah t Road to the Mi 1. It, is about 22 chains in length. To do nhat is required to make this portion of the road fairly passable will probably cost £—. To do tannine the exact line of the r<ad it will be necessary to have it surveyed, as I have h *en unable to find any pegs or survey mprk- To get from Temuka to Mr with a trap it is at present necessary "to a® by Winchester j this is about double the distance it would be if the road w»* opened -»•'bout 15 chains of the Canal Heserve Roac are al cost impassable, and n quire a coat of clays about 400 cubic yards are required, and the coat will probably be about £ —. —The drain where the creek is diverted through Mr Lowe's land badly requires cleaning, and should be attended to at once. Thos cost will be about £—.—The longest of th© bridges on •In Milford and Beach Road is now unfit for moderately heavy loads. This bridge is built in th r ee spans of 43f f . each, with trussed girders. Qne of |he trupsep in the last ‘spap is completely rotten, and requires atterpiop ap early date,. lam of op'nion that this bridge is far longer than is r. quired, and that it will be greatly shorten© 1 when it is entirely renewed. I would therefore recommend that the qpan referred to be now taken up a nd the approach ipade up with earthwork, lbs cost of doing this I estimate at £—.—• The foundation of one abutment of the bridge ovor the Rangitira Creek, on the Rangitira Valley Road, is partly undermined, and should there be a heavy rush of water serious damage may be done to it. I w old recommend that a concrete fiber and apron ha put in, and also tha(

the girders be strengthened with light piles built in the centre. he cost of this ■ work would probably be about £ —, and if undertaken it should be done at once as this is a most favorable time, the creek being nearly dry.—About 50 yards more shingle are required at the Rangitata in addition to that already done.—Several residents on the Rangitata Island have ■ pointed out to me the desirability of making another ford across the s>nth branch of the Rangitata Hiver, but 1 find the road is not shown on the map as running across the nveibed, but terminates at the terrace. As, however, it would be a convenience to have a ford at th's place, and it seems that owing to the protective work done by the Government abqve the bridge the river will for the , future be confined chiefly to the north - branch, I would recommend that the work be done. For the same reason it is advisable to straighten the middle and lower fords.—A wooden culvert on the Boundary Boad has fallen in. 1 have had the hole fenced off, pending repairs.— Kates ; As directed, I have pressed for recovery of rates, and, as will be seen by the return, there is a comparatively small amount now outstanding,—Some poisoned wheat has been obtained, and it has been advertised that it is to be obtained at the same rate as last year.— 1 am, etc., F. Archer. ■ v It was resolved that the application of Mr Aitken be granted, and that the overseer be authorised to obtain the services of a surveyor to deterthat the claying of the Canal Beserve road be done, and the drain near Mr Low’s land - cleaned - that the overseer’s sugges- : tidn with * regard to the Milford and Beach Eoad Bridge be given effect to; that the culvert over the Rangitira Talley Creek be repaired; that Mr . Sheehan be offered the work of shingle carting at Rangitata; that the new ferd recommended at Rangitata be made. TENDERS. The following tenders were received : Contract No. 21—Formation, Main Road : T. Davis, £24 10s lOd; B. Counihan, £l9 10s; J. Fifield, £lB (accepted). Contract No. 22—Cleaning Dram, Clyne’s Eoad: D. Mclnnea, Is 6d per chain; C. McAuliffe, £4, (accepted.) Contract No. 23—Cleaning Drain Upper Swamp Road: C. McAuliffe, Is 6d per chain ; D. Mclnness, Is 3d per chain (accepted). applications. Mr James Austin requested that a drain upon the Canal Road might be cleaned. The drain fronted on property lately purchased by him from Mr Greenaway. He was willing to pay half cost. — Ihe work to be done. Mr Fraser drew attention to a hole that required filling on the Waitohi Road, and also said that Langridge’s Eoad badly required shingling. —The overseer was requested to have the ; ■ ; necessary repairs none and to report ( at next meeting re shingling. “ The meeting then terminated.
