Cheap. —Certain book-debts in bankrupt estates put down at £2525 were submitted to auction last Saturday in Gisbourne and realised only £2 10s. Found Dead. —Benjamin Rawlings, an o'd man, left his home at Reowicktown, Blenhiem, and not returning, a search party found him lying on the river bank dead. Village Settlement. — A movement is is on foot in Pleasant Point to buy a piece of land from the Levels Station and form thereon a vdlige settlement. We wish the project every success.

Geraldine Stock Sale .--The Geraldine fortnightly stock sale takes place tomorrow. Attention is directed to the entries for this sale advertised by Messrs J. Mundell & Co., Messrs H. B. Webster & Co., and Mr E. B. Guinness, associated with Mr A. E, Uox,, Messrs Mundell and Co. also sell some valuable freehold properties to-morrow. Deceased Legislator. —A monument erected to commemorate the public services of the late A. R. Menzies, first Superintendent of South'and , and for 30 years M L.C. was unveiled last Friday in the Eastern Ceme'ery by Mr Mitchell, mayor of Invercargill. • The memorial, which takes the form of an obelisk of polished lluapuke granite about 20ft high, was erecied by public subscription. Me Wood Many of our readers who remember Mr Wood as head master of the Timaru school will be sorry to learn that through illness he has had to give up teaching. He went Home some time ago on account of id-health, and now has written to the Timaru committee that he does not intend to return, as his medied advisers say that he must give up leaching and brain work of kind for 12 months.

Missing. —Samuel Checkley, a mining engineer has mysteriously disappeared at the Biy of Islands under ciicurastances lending to the belief he has been eaten np by wild pigs or Swallowed up with h>s horse in quicksands.—Mr 0. He was in low spirits, and it is feared that ho may have committed suicide. Later accounts says be has turned up. Skating Rinks.— The Alhambra Skating .Rink, Geraldine, will be open on Wednesday afternoon and evening, on Thursday afternoon, and on Friday afternoon and evening. Lovers of the art of roller skating will thus have ample opportunity for enjoying themselves this week. —There was a very good attendance at the Zealandia Rink, Temuka, on Saturday night, which was open under Mr J. C. Lyon’s management. Everything went smoothly and enjoyably. Mr Lyon baa taken charge of the Columbia Rink, Timani, and we wish him every success.

Wesleyan Church. At the above chuicb, in Teinuka, last Sunday, Jubil-e Thanksgiving Services were held, the first 50 years of the Church in New Z aland having expired. There wm a fair attendance in the morning, but (he church was nearly full in the evening. At the morning service the Kev, Mr Bunn preached a most eloquent sermon on the Mosaic jubilee, and m the evening four addiesses were given on evangelical subjects, The choir gave several Moody and Sankey's hymns splendidly, and were heartily joined by the congregation. Thanksgiving offerings were taken up on behalf of connectional funds, and were subscribed to liberally. The proceedings came to a close with the pronouncing of the benediction by the Rev, Mr Buna. St. Saviour’s Church, Temuka.— lt will be seen by advertisement that the social gathering on the 3rd instant takes place in the Volunteer Hall insteid of the Oddfellows’ Hall. Tea will be on the tables at 6.30 p.ra. A splendid programme of vocal and instrumental music has been prepared, some of the best talent in the district having been secured. Three items will be trios between piano, clarionet, and violin, consisting of a selection from the “ Bohemian Girl,” a hornpipe, and a waltz. A beautiful pianoforte duet, called “The Canary Birds,” will also be played, At the close a charade will be performed by a juvenile troupe of eight, the audience guessing the’ words each time the curtain falls. Altogether the first gathering of the season promises to be both successful and useful.
