Temoka Skating Rink. The Z-ia-landiu >-kating Rink, will be open this evening from 7.30 until 10 o'clock.
Sheep Returns.—Owners of sheep are reminded that returns of sheep owned bv them on the 31st May most be sent in by Monday next. Sudden Death.—A man named Fred. Bean, farmer Rangiora, told a constable, in Cathedral Square Christchurch, that he was suffering in the heart. He leaned against a post and fell. He was taken in a cab to the police station and found to be dead.
Found Dead—The body of a young girl named Bessie Thomson, who was engaged aa servant at Mrs Christie's, Otitram, Otago, was found in a well near the back door of the house. She waa last seen about 9 o'clock on Thursday evening, and it is supposed that she fell into the well.
Wbbletan Chitroh.—To-morrow the Wealeyan Church celebrate their jubilee all New Zaalaod. In some cases there will be a change in the seivice. At Temuka there will be a sermon in the morcing by the minister. In the evening there will be a People's Service, for the most part hymn singing (Sinkry) and short addresses by different speakers.
William O'Brien. —Mr William O'Brien, M.P., is to be married to a Miss Kaffalavitch, the daughter of a Parisian banker. The bride's f mily belong to a distinguished Russian family. Her brother, who is an eminent writar on political economy, Ins been private secretary to the Russian Minister, Count Schouvaloff, and represents llutsia in Paris at present. The Irishmen of Cmterbury propose muking a wedding present to Mr O'Brien in the shape of articles of furniture made of New Zealand wood. For this purpose money is being collected through Canttrbury at the present time.
Kewspapbu Tboujsles.—The libel action Butcher v. Payton, proprietor of the Wairarapa Daily, was concluded on Thursday evening. The jury awarded pliintiff one farthing damages. The Chief Justice refused to make an order for cost 3. At the Police Court Dunedin, Samuel Lister, printer of the Otago Workman, was charged with publishing a certain paper to which the name and abode of the printor was not attached. The document was as follows f -" Up ( Up { Up [ Shareholders of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, Up ! before it is too late, for we have in our midst an imported, cunning, shrewd, crafty, deep, designing, practical, and sciontific swindler! Up! Up I Up!" The evideoce was circumstantial. Defendant was fined £lO and .costs £6 2.5, the prosecutor putting in only ,Qn,e copy.

Valueless Cheques.—J. E. HydeHarris, barrister and solicitor, of Kavelock, was charged on Thursday with issuing valueless cheques at Blenheim and was remanded till Saturday. He was arrested at Ashburton. Applications for Crown Lands.— I> is notified in our advertising columns that applications for Crown lands in the Geraldioe district, received on June 24 will be considered and balloted for at the sitting of the Land Board, Christcburcb, on July 3rd. Entertainment,—An entertainment in aid of the prize fund of the Terauka District High School was given in the Volunteer Hall last evening. There was a large attendance, and a lengthy find van'ed programme was gone through very successfully. A report wiil appear in our next issue.
Evangelistic Services.—Mrs P. W. Jones, wife of the Rev. P. W. Jodob, of V/addington, commences to-morrow morning a week's evangelistic services in the Piimiive Methodist Church, Gernldine. Mrs Every, late of Oamaru, and the Rev. (t. Clement are expected to take pirfc in the meeting. Entertainment and Dance—An enterUinment and dance in aid of the funds of the Mechanics' lus'itute will be held in the Pleasant Point Assembly Rooms on Friday evening next. The programme arranged is a first-rate one, and those who attend will be sure to thoroughly enjoy themselves.
Charges Against Teachers. The Dunedin Board of Education considered the request of the local branch of the Teachers Association that any charges against teachers should bo formulated ,»nd copies given to the persons accused. Strong opposition was shown to the proposal, but the board came to no decision, leaving the matter over to next meeting. Sanitary Arrangemests at Pleasant Point.—An effoit is to be mide to arrange for soma improvem-nt of the sanitary condition of Pleasant Point. The township has spread rapidly and now boasts a considerable population. Thereare as vet no regulations dealing with drainage" or tin disposal of nightsoil, etc., and the increase of infant mortality has led the thinking members of the community to urge the inhabitants to take immadi-ste steps to remedy several existing eyils. A meeting will shortly be held to discuss the matter.
Photography.—Mr J. McChskey, of Ger>ildine, has just completed to the order of a well-known resident of the town, two enlarged photographs of the said gentleman aod his wif«. The enlargements, which are of nearly life-size, are of the cUbs known as permanent enlargements, and are finished in crayons and Indian ink. The whol" of the work, inc'uding lh» mounting and framing witb a heavy gilt frame, has been done by Mr McGaskey, and the two form a very handsome pair of portraits. Pleasant Point. The friends and members of the Church of England resident at Pleasant Point epent a yery enjoyable evening on Thursday last in the Assembly Rooms. For some time past the ladies of the congregation have been making efiSrls to raise a sum of money sufficient to cover the cost of certain church fu.niture that has been urgently needed, and the various gifts obtained by them from their friends were disposed of by lottery, in accordance with regulations preecubed by the Colohihl Secretary. Every purchaser of a ticket received a prize of fair value, some of them being of particulir value. At the close of thn distribution a dunce was held, which was kept up until 12 o'clock and highly appreciated by the younger members.
