Barker, Ross, and Captains'Woollcombe and Butter. From correspondence with Mr O’Connor. Marine Engineer, it appeared that the harbor works so far had cost £281,000. The Bill for altering the mode of collecting rates so as to let the local bodies do it was discussed, amended, ordered to be advertised, and forwarded to Mr Turnbull. A letter was received from the harbor master’s crew demanding more wages and payment for overtime.— The secretary stated that the men started at G a.m. and worked till 5, and sometimes 12 at night. The men on the wharf were getting is 3d an hour now instead of Is. —Mr Talbot thought the letter was dictatorial in tone. There must be something underneath it. —Tne matter was referred to the standing committee. She engineer’s report dealt with the condition of the breakwater and the lighting of the wharf, but contained nothing of special interest, He was instructed to prepare plans for lighting the wharf. The harbor master reported that 33 steamers and 7 sailing vessels had arrived during May. When two or three vessels were swinging at the buoys there was not room enough, and he suggested additional mooring accommodation. —The matter was referred to the standing committee, but : Mr Ross gave notice of his intention to move that a wharf be erected along the north mole so as to provide more accommodation.
A letter from the Bank of New Zealand notified that a fixed deposit of £17,600 had matured, with £875 interest. Of this the bank had, as instructed, placed £6475 to current account and deposited £12,000 for twelve months at 5 per cent.—The secretary stated that about £3OOO would be required directly for the tug, and the next interest payment of £SOOO would have to be borrowed from this fund temporarily. Accounts amounting to £IBB6 were passed for payment. Of this £lll9 was the deposit, with interest, of Messrs Pailiser and Jones, and £225 for Mr Geo. Gabitea’ flagstaff section.
