AUTOMATIC POLICE SIGNALS.
_ The system of automatic police signals which is about to be adopted bj Scotland-yard seem to be as nearly perfect as any such system can be. Its fundamental basis is the street lamp-post. To a given number of lamp-posts will be attached a little apparatus which will be in electric communication with the chief police station of the "district and with other lamp-posts. Upon the dial is inscribed a list of "calls," such as "Fire," " Ambulance," " Murder," " Burglary," and "Send Assistance." All that a policeman on his beat has to do is to turn the pointer of the dial to a particular " call," when his want is immediately made known at the head office. By a further arrangement questions can be addressed from headquarters to the policeman on the beat, who will learn that a query awaits him by seeing a red dkc rise in front of the flame of the lamp. For a small payment householders will be allowed a key which will enable them to open the apparatus, and to signal to the police station in the event of fire, burglary, or other accident which may require the presence of the police. It is hoped soon to see the system in working order.
