Mr Rolleston.—Mr Rolleston has consented to come forward as a candidate for Halswell. The Doric—The R.M.S. Doric arrived at Plymouth on Sunday last, after a passage of 38 days from Lyttelton. Fatal Accident. ~ John Sinclair, painter, who fell from a ladder at Gillies' warehouse, Dunedin, on Friday, died from a fractured skull. Salvation Armt, Giralbine.—A meeting to welcome Captain Rattray and Cadet Scott will be held in the Oddfellows' Hail, to-morrow evening. All are invited, the seats being free. Tbmuka Sxatijk* Rink.—There was a very fair attendance at the Zealandia Skating , Rmk en Saturday evening, and all appeared ' '(MBpy themselves. Doubtless ai the Beason advances rinking will become more popular. A Road Board in Trouble.—The members of the Waimea Road Board, Nelson, have received a lawyer's letter, issued underinstructions from the AuditorGeneral, demanding from each £ls, being the total amount drawn by all the mem* bers as travelling expenses. Geralbine Stock Sale.—The fortnightly sale of stock at Geraldine takes place to-morrow. Entries are advertised by Messrs J. Mundell and Co., Messrs H. B. Webster and Co., and Mr A. E. Cox, associated with Mr E. R. Guinness*. All the firms mentioned book entries to hour of sale. Too Mtjch Governed.—At a meeting of delegates from the West Coast local bodies at Hokitika on Friday night resolutions were passed that the couuties on the West Coast should remain intaGt, but that there were too many local bodies, leaving it to the Government to decide which should be done away with. Copies of the resolutions are to be sont to the ministry , and members of Parliament. 1 Leprost.—A gentleman' at Hokjanga writes to a friend says ;—" My brother was a few days ago on a'vucgination tour to Oerekino, and reports violent outbreak of leprosy amoDg the natives, several of whomdied from it. Others are in a fearful state, fingers aud toes rotted off, nose, teeth, und jaws corriding ; bodies rotten. He hag reported the matter to the Government. Strange to say it got this length before we heard of if.'" The natives are scared and avoid each other, Tmoti Puhipi recommends the lepers being deported to the Three Kings Island. Ih© Government ar« making inquiries. Arrest.—A man named Albert Norman was arrested at Chrislphurch on Saturday charged with the larceny'of £IOO worth of jewellery jn Palmerston North last August. It is said the accused attracted suspicion to himself a short time ago by disposing of three gold watches at Bluecliffa station for £l3, which when taken to an expert were valued at £4f. When the police heard of the affair they looked after the wajiches, and took them from the buyer, but the seller had disappeared three days before. Subsequent enquiries led to the arrest of Norman on suspicion of being the man wantsd. Other portions of the stolen property have been found at Blueoliffs,
■Found Drowned.— Th» bo-ly of a young woman named Delia Lenahao, barmaid, was found floating in the Wellington h\rbonr. It is supposed to be a casa of accidental drowning. AFTER Many DaTS.— Some human remaina have been found ou the beach netr Helensville. They are supposed to be those of a man named George Vines!-, who was drowned in the locality about 11 years ago.

The rate is lower than usual. Draughts.—A. match at draughts, Timaru v. Temuka, is arranged to take place at Temuka on Thursday, 26th inst. The following will represent Temuka : Messrs Hooper, JR. J. Lavery, Bennett, Kokoro, Chapman, Nicholas, Beck, Storey, Oldfield, Denby, and Sim.
The Exhibition. The Evening Post states that complaints have i reached it regarding delay in returning I exhibits frodi the Dunedin Exhibition, I and that exhibitors are unable to find any ' truce of their property or to get any information regarding it. Digging Plough.—There was an exhibition trial of a Raid and Gray digging plough nn Wednesday last at the farm of Mr H. M'Lean, near Gore. The Mataura Ensign states that there was a fair attendance of farmers, and th« trial wee a successful one. The plough worked on stubble only, and completely pulverised the soil, covering all growths, and leaving the groand ready for the drill. So satisfied was the owner of the lmd with results achieved that he bought tbe plough. No lea land was available to test the plough, but most satisfactory reports are to hand from others who have it and found that it could do excellent woik when there was a thick matting which had to be placed " under the sod." The ordinary doablefurrow ploughs can b« converted into diggers at a small cost and used in either capacitr. Saltation Army at Geraldibb.—Captain MoCormick farewelled from Geraldine ou Friday evening last and advantage was 'aken of the opportunity to hold a coffee supper in the Oddfellows hall. The provisions were given by & number of the lady members and sympathisers with the Army, and were ample for even the large gathering that assembled in the hall. There were many Salvationists present inoluding members of the corps from Woodbury and Feel Forest. Soma very earnest addresses were given during the evening, that of Oap f «in McOormick being especially so. During Captain McCormiek's stay i i Geraldine, some ten months nod a half, she has worked incessantly, and by her kindly nature and genuine endeavours to promote the spiritual interests of those with whom she has come ia contract she has seemed for herself many friends. Considerable regret was expressed at ber haying, in accordance with the ru'es of the array, to leave Geraldine.
Major Stewabd at Wai-iti. Major Steward addressed his constituents at Wai-iti on Thursday evening, la the course of hit address he advocated reform of the Legislative Council as being preferable to abolition, and would like to see the upper chamber elective • two-thirds to be elected by the local government bodies, and one-third by the Crown, to put ia individuals who might hare have been overlooked. Conmoiilors should not be elected for life. He condemned the Charitable Aid Bill brought in by the Government hut session, and while not liking the property tax did not see how the country could do without it. He thought agricultural machinery to the value of jB2OOO should be exempt, in addition to certain classes of maohinery. He was in favor of a land, intome and property tax—that they should retain the lattar tax t > get at certain property that could not be reached by the other taxes. On land he would allow deductions amounting to £IOOO and tax on the remainder. With regard to property he had spoken of he would allow the £SOO exemption and take the rest; and, finally, with regard to income he would allow £2OO. He oandemned the land legislation of the Government, contending that dummyism was now rampant, and that though the Government was selling a great deal of land very little bona fide settlement was takiog place, consequently the exodua still oontinued. He also condemned the railway management, and argued that cheaper carriage of passenger*' and produce would result in inoreaied receipt*. Ai fas eonolusion of his address Major Steward was awarded a vote of thanks and confidence. Football.—A Cup match between teams representing Timaru and Waihi took place in Timaru oo Saturday, and resulted in the defeat of the visitors by 15 points goals and 3 tries) to mf. One goal and a try were obtained in the first spell, and 2 goals and 2 tries in the second. The teams were as follows; Waihl: W. Moora, Kalaugher, Han (captain), McLeod, Morrison, Brinkman Wakely, Bolston, Stewart (3), Bell, a! Hart, Shallard, and H. F. Harte! Timaru t Lovegrove, Macintosh, Perry (2), Rhodes, Jameson, G. Jones, Haasell, LeCren, M.atheson (2), Oxby', Stokes ? and White. At timei jqme firstrate play was shown, but the visitors were decidedly overmatched.—On Saturday last a match was played in Timaru between teams from the Timaru and Terauka Schools, both sides haying the assistance of old boys. A very enjoyable game ended in a win >r Temuka by 8 points (2 goals and 2 tries) to 6 points (1 g oa | and 3 tries). For Timaru (J. Collins T Drummond, W. McKay, and C. Buchanan obtained a try each, and the last was converted into a goal by Collins. Collins' try was the result of a splendid run from his own 2§. Temuka fjenry and Gillespie scored, and Gilleppje's was converted. A'try was also allowed toTerquka because a Timaru player carried the ball over his own line put qf a aprum, and a goal was potted from j;he fjeld. Messrs Connolly and Smith were umpires, and Mr Hogben referee, and their decisions gave the greatest satisfaction to both sides.—On Saturday next a Cur, ma tch will be played at Terauka between Timaru and Tarawa. Temitka Dairy Factory.—The monthly meeting of the directors of the above comp«ny was held laat Friday eveniog. Present—Messrs Brown (chairman), Austin, Matthews, and Scott. Some routine business was transacted, and a resolution was carried thai all accounts be collected forthwith. NabbOw Escape.—Mr Hedges, who lives on the Milford Road, narrowly escaped baring his house destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. A. firs had been lit in a lean-to of tbe bouse, to smoke some baoob, and by some means it spread to the wall and roof of tbe house. Fortunatftly the danger was discovered in time, and plenty of water being available the flames were soon extinguisho*. Had the wall been of wood, the house .must have been destroyed. .
