COMPENSATION TO PUBLICANS.
London, Jane 14. The defeat of Mr Acland's amendment (by 31 votes) to expend the surplus on education instead of compensation to publicans, removes the main objection to the Licensing Bill, and Government will appoint a Commission next session to consider the licensing laws nnd the question of granting compensation to publicans. Sydney, June 14. A most disorderly meeting took place last night over the compensation question. It was called in the first instance by the Sydney licensed victuallers for the purpose of protesting against nonpayment of compfnsation to publicans, but the local optionists turned up in force, tot'k possession o! '.he meeting, and passed an amendm-nt in favor of local option with no compensation. Matters became so serious at one time that tho police had to form a cordon to Separate the two panes.
