WA.IH.I V. TEMUKA

Ihe first Cup match ot the season \ under the S.C, Rugby Union was played , at Winchester on Saturday last between I the above teams, and resulted in a win i for Waihi by a goal and four iries ' (7 points) to nil. Both clubs bad pul tbeir strongest teams in the field, and,, although it was anticipated that Waihi would win, still they were not expected to do so by such a large margin. Among the Temuka players we were glad to see that several of their veterans had donned the colors, evidently with the intention ot trying to make a bid for victory. The ball was kicked off at about 8.80, and for a short time play seemed very even. At last A. Shallard got the bail, and, running up to within a few feet of the goal-line, neatly passed to Kalaupher, who scored first try for Waihi, Owing to the difficult angle the kick at goal, which was a splendid attempt, was not successful. It was now seen that Temuka were overmatched, and tbeir goal was threatened, several times, although their forwards, together with Geo. Yelvin and Roberts worked hard to relieve, Shortly afterwards Kalaugber ran in and scored behind the posts ; Shallard converting. After kicking off, Temuka, by determined play, and headed by Carr and Fitzgerald, worked the ball well down the field, but the Waihi forwards, by a combined rush, made up the lost ground, and A. Tien, who was playing a fast game, . touched down. The kick at goal was unsuccessful. In the second spell the game was faster, but want of practice told on the Temuka men, who were for the most part pretty well engaged in defending their own lines. They did no passing, and their hicks were not fed as they shonld have been, consequently they were unable to score. On the other hand, Waihi passed and dnbb'ed brilliantly, and at times completely nonplussed iheir opponents in this manner. Very shortly the ball was again passed to Kalnugher, who ran round and scored his third try behind the posts. He took ihe kick himself, but what appeared lo be on unmistokeable goal was given as a poster. Yelviu then, by a good run, relieved bis side, but was neatly brought down by Moore, and, being unsupported, lost the ball, which was dribbl'd back over the Temuka line, and Waihi’s fi r th try was scored by A. Stewart, bat was again not converted. Soon afterwards time was called, For Temuka, G. Yelviu, Roberts, Storey, Fitzgerald, Lavery, W. McOallura, Franks, and Carr played well individually, but want of crrabination on the part of the team generally, nullified their efforts. For Waihi the forwards all worked wellj and it would be difficult to single out any one above the others, although the Stewarts (2) showed up most prominently in their fine dribbles. In the backs Kulaugher and A, Shallard played brilliantly, whiD the rest were perfectly safe and plaved up well, Messrs U, Smith and W. Storey acted as umpires for Waihi and Temuka respectively, and Mr 0. N, Macintosh carried the referee’s whistle,
