AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Melbourne, May 26. Captain McMeekan, of the well-known firm of Messrs McMeekan, Blackwood and Co., is dead. An extraordinary explosion of sewer gas occurred at Colljngwood on Sunday night. Reports resembling the firing of heavy guns were heard io Wellington and Yere streets, and showers of silt water were thrown from the street traps. Two narrow escapes from fatal accidents occurred. Sydney, May 27. The Sydney Presbytery has called on the Rev. Mr Gardner to return forthwith, and answer the charges against: him. Mr Gardner wired from Auckland resigning bis position in the Ministry. As a denial to the charge that be is afraid to meet O’Connor, Kemp offers to row the Canadian for the sculling, championship without any stake. O’Connor declines this, but has intimated bis willingness to row for the coveted honor and £2OO a side. Adelaide, May 27. The Postal Conference to-day received a cable from London signed by all the Agents-General strongly urging the acceptance of Sir John Pender’s offer for a reduced cable tariff, which is made conditionally on the Sooth Australian Government accepting 5d as the transit rate. A motion finally accepting the reduction was earned, and the conference closed its sitting.
