A DANGEROUS CHARACTER.

Amy Bock, alias Bennett, alias Lang (says the Otago Daily Times) was charged with, on the 24th inst., stealing one box, value 10s, and certain crockery, value £2, the property of Henry Cox, —The accused pleaded guilty,—Mr Solomon, who appeard for the prosecution, said that it was evident that accused had obtained employment at Mr Cox’s house by means of a forged letter as to her character. i She. deliberately stole the articles mentioned, and had also obtained money on Mr Cox’s piano, alleging that she was his sister. There were other charges pending against the accused.—The bench sentenced accused to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor.—The accused was further charged with, on the 25th April, wilfully and knowingly, by certain false pretences, obtaining from one Robert Francis, the sum of £2l, with intent to defraud him of the same. —On the application of Detective Henderson this case was adjourned until Friday. —Accused was further charged with forging a certain promissory note for the sum of £22 Bs.—This case was also adjourned.—This is a clever young lady who had a peculiar career in the Geraldine district not long ago. She obtained money by means of false pretences, and then advertised in this paper that she had lost a purse containing money. Of course no one thought she would leave the place before she recovered the purse, bat next day she cleared out, and was not heard of until recently an advertisement appeared in this paper, stating that anyone desiring to know anything about Miss Bennett could find it oat by communicating with Mr L. N. Edgar, Burnside, Dunedin. Mr Edgar also wrote most pathetic letters to certain people and sent money to pay all Miss Bennett’s debts. We now find that Mr Edgar never existed, and that the letters were written by Miss Bennett herself. .
