TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The regular monthly meeting of the committee of the above school was held on Tuesday evening. Present — Messrs W. Storey (chairman), B. Brown, W. Wills, G. H. Mogridge, J. Velvin, and P. MeCaskill. An apology was received from Mr Eutland for non-attendance. attendance. A- list was submitted of those persons who had received notices for the irregular attendance of their children at school. The secretary reported that the attendance was still fair from good, and in connection therewith read the headmaster’s -report, which was as follows :—■ “ feiE—l have the honour to submit the following report for April:— Boys. Girls. Total. Average weekly roll 198.3 178.3 376.6 Averaga attendance 134.5 125.5 259.8 Highest attendance 151 149 SCO The attendance has fallen very considerably owing to the prevailing epidemic. It will be observed that the average is 40 below the highest attendance; ihe attendance of 300 was on Tuesday, Ist April, when it began to immediately to fall. On -Thursday of the same week it was 224 and once since the vacation it fell as low as 196. It has since risen ; this forenoon there were 320 present. One of the staff, Miss Goodev> was laid aside for one week by sickness. We require for school purposes, 6 boxes pens, and 1 gross penholders, 1 gross drawing pencils, 12 boxes slate pencils, 4 boxes chalk, arid ink. I enclose cheque for £5 4s 6d, being the amount of stationary fees received for current quarter. I have the honour to be, etc., “W. Bryars.” The question of attendance was discussed, and it was resolved that the ; secretary ascertain from the headmaster if the children of those parents upon whom notices had been served were resuming attendance, and if not that steps be taken to compel them to do so. The secretary was instructed to procure the stationery required. The chairman reported that during the month fuel had been required. This he had procured.—The chairman’s action was confirmed. REPAIRS.

The chairman reported that he had visited the school and found the girl’s lavatory in a bad state of repair.—He was authorised in conjunction with the secretary to have necessary repairs done, the same to be carried out to the satisfaction of the visitor for the mouth. , CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read :

.From the Board of Education stating iu reply to the committee’s letter of the 17th that the committee’s recommendation would be laid before the Board at its next meeting, and that meanwhile Miss Russell would also on their recommendation be continued in her acting appointment. From the same advising that the sum of £ll 7s 6d had been, remitted to the credit of the committee at the Bank of New Zealand, the same being the amount for incidentals for 2nd quarter. From the same notifying the appointment of Miss E. Bruce to the vacancy caused by Miss Brown’s resignation, and also the temporary employment of Miss Rnssell as her substitute. From the same advising that Miss Bruce'would take up her duties on or about the Ist June. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £3 11s were passed for payment. THE'CONCERT. The chairman reported that very satisfactory arrangements were being made for the proposed concert. The first part would consist of songs, etc., by the children. . The date was not yet fixed, but it was expected to tako place some time in June. VISITOR. _Mr P. McCaskiil was appointed visitor for the month. HOLIDAY. It was decided to close the school on Monday the 26th, in honour of Her Majesty’s birthday. The meeting then terminated,
