AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Town Board took place last night. Present—Messrs E. Lee Brown, E. Yallender, J. Ashwell, and A. Frew. COEBESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows From the Geraldine Road Board covering copies of resolutions to be laid before a public meeting proposed to be held at Geraldine on June 3rd. Tho resolutions were te the following effect; 1, 1 hat no extended powers of rating be given to the County Council prior to taking the vote of all ratepayers in the old and new water race districts. 2. That in the opinion of this meeting the extended powers sought for at the conference of chairmen of County Councils be extended to Road Boards where in force, and that a .clause be added to the present Road Board Act enabling each Board or County Council where no Board exists to compel the neighboring Beard or Council to clear its water courses and riverbeds from obstructions for one mile beyond the boundary line of such district. 3. That this meeting is of opinion that all bridges on county roads, as defined in schedule 1882 of main roads for the purposes of the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, should be kept in thorough repair by the county in charge, and that the power should still be vested with the Governor to say whether certain bridges should be closed or not. 4. That the present Charitable Aid Boards having failed t© administer relief satisfactorily this meeting suggests that borough councils and road and town boards in each county council district administer outdoor relief, and that the existing Charitable Aid Boards should confine their duties to the management of hospitals. From P. Ooira applying to have the footpath in Denmark street between Shaw and John streets formed, as the sections now leased to Messrs Goldsmith and Pulford were likely to receive an overflow of surface water.— The board could not at present entertain the request, as they now had more urgent works in progress. From the same applying to have the names of Messrs Goldsmith and Pulford placed upon the roll in respect of sections 409 to 420, the same having been leased to them.—The latter signified their consent and the exchange was ordered to be made.

Gregory, applying for leave to rent an unoccupied cottage.— The clerk reported that there were two other applicants for the same cottage, and asked for instructions. —Mr Gregory’s application was accepted. From Mr Lavery, re extra work done to crossings, and not allowed for. —<Kesolved “That Mr Layery be allowed the sum of 10s,” The clerk was instructed to arrange with Mr Lavery for an adjustment of accounts. Gentleue^, —f have the honor to submit the following report 5 . Creek Cleaning,—This contract is not yet completed to my satisfaction, or in accordance with the specification, I haye gone over the work with the contractor, and pointed out the balance requiring to be done to complete it, and be baa promised to carry out the same without further delay. Roads, Etc.—Some repairs are required to the appioaches to Tavender’s bridge. The road hero is very narrow, and, heavy traffic fieiog confined to one track, the ordinary shingle wears down very quickly. X recommend its repair with coarse metal broken to about 2£in gtuge. I have arranged for repairs to the bridge. That portion of Gamsck street fronting Mr Spooner’s will also require shingling at no distant date, as since the road has been formed there has been a good deal of traffic upon it. It should be one of the first of the new ppaejs (q receive attention.
The fooipalh in front of reserve 1700 one of those exchanged by the board and sold to Mr P. Coira by the Government will require to be made up, as the reserve receives a certain amount of drainage water from the street. It would raqaife an expenditure of k the Creese at Ganfack street, similar to those recently constructed, would bo of convenience to the residents iq that locality.
I submit a statement of the amount expended in cleaning water-tables, and estimate of what i consider the work could be dona for by contract. I recommend, in view of the approaching winter, that attention be given to this work at an early date, and believe that a contract system would prove aatiefactory. [Since the above was written the con - tractor has gone over the work again, and made considerable improvements, but I have not yet had an Opportunity of reviewing it with him but will do so at any date the board suggest]. A. W. Gaze, Clerk. Re Creek—-It was unanimously resolved after discussion consequence of the apathy shown by Mr Flaherty, the contractor for cleaning the creek, with regard to the completion of his contract, although ample time had been given him for the purpose, the penalty of three shillings per day, as provided by the specification, be enforced from the day following that on which Mr Flaherty received notice of the resolution passed on the 17th April last, thot is the 20th April until the present time, and be continued for every day during which the work remains unfinished to the satisfaction of the board’s overseer.” Resolved—" That the bridge suggested at Gamack street be erected on receipt of the money* accruing; from deferred-payment sections.” The overseer was instructed to invite tenders for shingling portion of North Town Belt; the same to be considered and dealt with by the chairman and overseer. In reference to the correspondence from the Geraldine Road Board the board was not interested as a body in the first three proposals and in reference to the fourth it was resolved “ That although of opinion that charitable aid is not dispensed in a satisfactory manner that the board do not feel that it would be in a position to relieve the necessities of its district from the funds at its disposal.
