Saltation Abmt at Woodbury,—The Salvation Army will hold a great field day in Woodbury on Monday next, winding up with a hosanna meeting and cake and sandwich banquet in the evening. The day being a holiday there should be a good attendance. Crown Lands bob Settlement.—Attention is directed to an advertisement r e . lating to land on the Three Springs, Albury, Opawa, Mount Nessing, Levels, and Oaunington runs, and The Brothers Range, open for sale or selection on and after Tueeday next.

Remitted Penalty. —Mr Taylor,brewer, Temuka, has received a letter from Mr 0. E. Cooper, Collector of Customs, Timaru, stating that His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to remit the penalty inflicted on him recently in Timaru, by which his beer and plant were forfeited to the Crown for a breach of the Beer Duty ; Act, Presbyterian Church.—The Rev. Geo. Barclay has declined the call to the Mackenzie Country charge. The Rev. Mr Todd has accepted the charge of Ihe Geraldine Church; and will be inducted on Wednesday,., June 4th. The Revs. Dickson, Gillies, and White will officiate on the occasion, Particulars will be found in an advertisement in another column. _ Football;— -Th'b following will rep-eient Temuka in the matoh .against Cambridge, which will take place in the Temuka Park on Monday next Full back, R. The team are partioularly requested to go in for training. Lecture on Farming -To-morrow night, Mr M. Murphy, the secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, will deliyer a lecture in the Volunteer Hall, Temukq under the auspices of the Temuka Caledonian Soeuty. The subject will be “ Farming,” whicn is one upon which the lec’urer is admittedly an authority. There will be no charge for admission, but tickets may be procured from the principal storekeepers, and from Messrs Aspinill and Co., Mr J. Ashwell, and Mr A, W. Gizo. In such an eminently agricultural district as Temuka considerable interest should be t»ken in tnch a lecture, and there will doubtless be a goad attendance. The speifty will gladly welcome the presence of ladies. South Obabi School Committee.— The monthly meeting of the South Orari School Committee was held in i he schoolroom on Monday last, all the members being present, Correspondence was re id from the Board of Education, notifying th t the sum of £4 5s had been paid to the credit of the committee as incidentals for the present quarter. The tsacher’a report was read, which showed that the roll number is 83, and the average attendance for the past month bus been 55. The teacher also reported on seven pupils who failed to make half the numbgr of during the last three months. It was proposed by Mr O’Neil, seconded by Mr Bat A, and carried—" That the policeman be sent round with the usual notices to the parents of absentees ; and after this date the committee are determined to strictly enforce the compulsory clause of the Education Act if parents do not send their children more regula-ly to school." A discussion arose as to the library. Mr O’Neil kindly offered to open it on Saturday night. There was no visitor’s report. Mr Beonett was appointed visitor for the ensuing month, and the meeting adjourned until the third Monday in Jone.

TempbraNOE. A meeting of persons interested in forming a United Temper ance Association was he'd in the Social Jflall on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance. The Rev. R. S. Bunn presided, and explained .the object of tlieir meeting, and stated that the Revs. Dickson aud Hamilton had expressed their approval of the movemen', He mentioned that their absence from the meeting was doe to other important engagetnente. Messrs J. McCaskill, Cooper an i Matson spoke shortly on the temperance work done last year, after which the following committee was appointed—Messrs Bryant and Metson to represent Primitive Methodists, Messrs Hooper and Lynch Wesleyans, Messrs McOu ly and Russell .Presbyterians, Messrs Dayey and ano'her Episcopalians, and the Captain and Lieutenant Salvation Army. , It was resolved on the motion of Mr Metson that the society be called the Terauka United Gospel Temperance Association, After singing Hymn 42 in Sankey s, the meeting closed with the Benediction.
