FEDERATION.
Sydney, May 14. The Federation debate was resumed in the Legislative Assembly last night. Mr Dibbs said that if they were to depart from their present constitution let it be under a flag of their own, as the United States of Australia. He asserted that it had been clearly shown that this federation movement was only started to cover the defeat of the Ministry on their fiscal policy. Mr Dibbs read an extract from a letter received by the Premier from General Edwards, which be (Mr Dibbs) declared to be a conspiracv between the Premier and an Imperial officer. He was called to order by the Speaker. The extract referred to was as follows :—“ A portion of the Chinese Imperial squadron is now at anchor under my window, consisting of ironclads of the newest type, and four very fine heavily-armed cruisers, Admiral Ping, who is in command, was an old comrade of mine under Gordon in 1864. I have been urging him strongly to take the fleet and show the flag in foreign ports especially Australia, but he cannot go* this year further than Singapore. Would not this help your federation J ”
