THE CABLE RATES.
London. May 14. Sir John Pender has officially notified to the Agents-General that the Cable Companies are willing to test the effect of a cheap tariff for one year, by reducing the charge to 5s per word from the Ist January next, and accepting half the risk of loss, on condition that the colonial Governments guarantee the other hAlf, If.the tariff responds to the reduction, the companies and the Government might agree to extend the period, but with a guarantee to terminate at the end of the year, the companies to revert to a tariff not exceeding 8s per word, provided such rate gave the companies the same revenue as they at present receive. With the 5a tariff if the tariff increased by 25 per cent, the colonies would have to make up £40,000 ; if the increase was 50 per cent, £25,000, and if 75 per cent, £IO,OOO only, which, distributed over all the colonies, would represent quite a nominal liability. An increase of 92 per cent would extinguish the guarantee.
