Thomas Salter died suddenly at Ins residence, Anderson Bay road, Dunedin, on Wednesday. In December he arrived from Sydney with his family. He was in indifferent health, having been in a lunatic asylum before coming here. Ho had been ordered that no spirits should be given to him, but during his wife’s absence in town Salter procured some rum, and on her return she found him dead. At the inquest a verdict was returned of death from premature decay due to chronic alcoholism and insanity. At a meeting of the Dunedin hospital trustees a letter was read from Mrs Batchelor asking if the trustees were prepared to accept the sum of £1270 which had been raised towards the erection of a ward for the treatment of special diseases of women, upon the distinct understanding that the money be devoted to the purpose for which it was raised. A motion that the money be accepted subject to the conditions stated was lost in favour of an amendment to the effect that consideration be deferred till the proposed nurses home is erected and the trustees see what is then necessary. Inquests were held at Nelson on Wednesday concerning two fires which occurred at Waimea West on the 6th and 7th April. The first case was that of an unoccupied six-roomed house owned by Christian Schwauss| who was at Wellington at the time! The house was insured in the National for £IOO. A verdict was returned that there was no evidence to show the origin of the fire. The second ease was that of a six-roomed house o wned by Henry who at the time was absent at Takatoa with his family. The house was insured in the Colonial office for £IOO, the stable for £75, and furniture for £3O. All were destroyed.
