The Art Gallery Committee, Dunedin, have decided to purchase another picture called “ Preparing for Market.” The Canterbury branch of the Railway Employes Society have decided to affiliate with the Trades and Labour Council, The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce is memorialising the Railway Commissioners to reduce the carriage on lime in the interests of farmers,

The fire was caused by the overheating of a stove. The Evening Post of Friday night has the following statement:—“ We are aware that a proposal will be made to resume charge of the railways forthwith, and dispense with the Commissioners on whatever terms as to compensation can be made with them.” In the Cabinet on Friday morning the Hon. J. H, Richardson was appointed successor to Mr F. W, Frankland as Commissioner of Government Insurance. No fresh appointments are to be made, the other officers receiving promotion accordingly. The Hon. Whitaker has returned to Auckland on private business for about ten days, he then returns to Wellington until after the seseien. At a meeting of the Wellington tramway and bus employes on Saturday and it was decided to form a union. Regulations, which are to come into force on June 2nd, were drawn up. The men demand nine hours per day for drivers and guards, and ten hours for grooms, with overtime for Sundays ; also that the wages be 45a per week, paid fortnightly, instead of by the calendar month. The storemen of Wellington formed a union last Saturday night.
