TEMUKA DAIRY FACTORY.

The monthly meeting of directors of the Temuka Dairy Comply was held at the Secretary’s office on Friday. Present-r-Messrs J. Brown (chairman), S. Cain, J. Scott, O. Matthews, B. A. Barker, and J. Austin, After routine business the position of tho markets was discussed, and it was considered that in their present condition little more than the net cost of cheese could be obtained. In view of a prospect of values improving, and of the fact of the cheese being prepared with a view to its keeping, it was decided not to place any on the market at present. The secretary reported upon the awards gained at the Dunedin Exhibition. The cheesp forwarded there had been sold at the suggestion of the secretary to the exhibition, immediately upon which the railway authorities jaade a claim for £4 6s 6d for freight.

The following correspondence upon the subject was read:— “ April 17th, 1890. To (he manager, Railway Goods Department, Dunedin. Sir,—i am in receipt of an account from you for railway charges on a quantity of cheese which was forwarded to the Exhibition in February last, in consequence, according to account, of the goods having been diverted to other than Exhibition purposes, whatever they may mean. The cheese was sent to the dairy produce show, and remained there unlil the show closed. Mr G. B, Hill, secretary of the committee, wrote asking if the official agent might sell it. This was agreed to by us and the cheese was sold. We did not receive any intimation that we were liable for railway freighter we should have followed our invariable practice of forwarding by steamer and so have avoided the excessively high railway rates. As we were induced to sell by the Exhibition authorities, and were not informed that such sale would involve payment of freight, we fail to recognise our liability in the matter. Yours, etc. ”

The following reply was received : “ Goods Department, Dunedin, 19th April, 1890. —Be cheese to Exhibition. Herewith extract from Gazette under which the cheese was carried, As these goods are acknowledged to have been sold there is no option but to charge you, and I shall be glad if you will pay same to the statioumaster at Temuka, and oblige—Tours, etc.” The secretary stated that the cheese sold weighed 1 ton 14 owt, and had been paid for. Mr K. E. Gray tendered his resignation of his seat upon the directory owing to his approaching departure from the colony, which was received with regret. The secretary reported that the factory bad been closed on April 30th. The amount of milk received during the month was 3727 gallons. Accounts amounting to £l5O were passed for payment. It was resolved to take stock of cheese, etc.,: on hand, and that an accurate statement of the position of the company should be prepared for comparison with that at the commencement of the season. The meeting then terminated.
