LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Ship Lyttelton Case. —Information has been received by Messrs Perry and Perry, the solicitors for the Timaru Harbor Board, that Shaw, Savill and Company’s claim against that body has, been dismissed on appeal to the House of Lords, and the plaintiffs cast in all costs. Th : s should prove a matter of congratulation to the district generally. It is encouraging also to the harbor board, -who have incurred some little censure from non-thinking members of the community. W esleyan Church, Tbmuka. —The Rev R. S. Bunn will conduct the morning and evening services in the above church tomorrow.
Licensing Meetings. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Licensing Commiiteo takes place on the 3rd June, and that of the Raukupuka Committee on the 4th.
Mount Peel Road Boakd. —The annual meeting of ratepayers in the Mount Peel Road District, will be held in the Road Board Office, Peel Forest, on Monday next, at noon.
Temuka Rifles.—An extra Government parade of this corps lakes p l ace next Monday evening, at 7.80 o'clock, Major Nowa'l being the inspecting officer. The annual ball in connection with the corps, will be held, as usual, on the night of the day on which the Queen's birthday is celebrated, and preparations are already being made for it.
Bazaas and Gift Auction. —The preparations for the approaching entertainments in aid of the circuit fund of the Temuka Wesleyan Church are going on apace, and, judging by previous effoits, they should be more than ordinarily successful. The Forest Bizaar, which takes place on the Btb, should, from its novelty, prove attractive, and there will be a concert of no mean character in the evening. A Cake and Apron Fair has also never been held in Temuka previously, and, viewing the bountiful harvest, contributions to the Gift Auction should be unusually large. Auction Sale at Oeahi. —The sale of Mr Greenaway’a farm and stock, etc., which took place yesterday, was attended by a very large number of people, probably some 600 being pressnt at mid-day. , The bidding throughout was spirited, and nearly every line submitted fetched goad values. The sheep in particular were sought after, they being of good even quality. A line of 600 2 and 4-tooth halfbred ewes and weathers brought 13s 6d, other priees being in proportion. Owing to the number of lots the sale was continued until a late hour, and when our reporter left the land had not been submitted. Messrs J. Mnndell and Co. in conjunction with Mr Guinness were the auctioneers. Boabd of Education. —This board met o n Wednesday. Present—Messrs S. W. Gold' smith (chairman), Jackson, Pearpoint, Gray > Barker, Howell, and Rev. G. Barclay. Amongst other things the building committee recommended alteration to be made to the closets at Hilton, and repairs to be made at Hilton, Wailohi Plat, and Milford schools. The board could not give a proper school to Arundell or Waitaki, but a perfectly plain leunto 16x12, with stove pipe instead of fireplace could be erected. The report was adopted except the part which referred to Arundell and Waitaki, which was postponed for a month. Mr Pearpoint promised to confer with the Arundell people. Mr Pearpoint moved that the Minister of Education be requested to raise the status of the Geraldine school to that cf a District High School. The motion was seconded by the Rev. G. Barclay, but Mr Talbot objected as no notice was given of it, and so not : ce was given of it for next meeting. Rangitata Station offered half cost of a £4 or £5 for a gymnasium,—No funds for such purposes. Bolfield asked for repairs to porch and improvement of well.—-Committee to attend to it and submit vouchers" Accounts for extras incurred at Geraldine in dividing the Tolunteer Hall into class rooms, shifting forms cte., presented by Mr Pearnoinc, were passed, and a tender accepted at £6 10s, for chipping and burning tussicks and levelling new ground. Mr Jackson drew attention to the great drain on the funds for these extras, and Mr Pearpoint defended them as quite unavoidable, and quice moderate.
