FATHER MATTHEW.
The Irish Times of March speaks as follows in reference to a meeting of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee :—The consideration of the designs for the statue of Father Mathew was resumed. On a previous day Miss Mary Redmond and Mr Herbert Barnes had been selected as the two competitors between whom the final choice should be made, the committee now decided, by a large majority, that Miss Redmond’s design and tender would be the most suitable for adoption. It is only right to add that the great merit of the design submitted by Mr Herbert Barnes was acknowleged by every member of the committee; but while Miss Mary Redmond’s design is no less meritorious, her tender for the completion of the work was considerably less than that of Mr Herbert Barnes. The committee does not feel itself as yet free to give an order for a public statue, but its hesitancy to do this will be removed as soon as subscriptions from the city of Dublin and' from other parts of Ireland, as well as from England, America, Australia, and New Zealand have been received. As the memory and the great work of Father Mathew are revered in all these countries, the committee earnestly hope that some home and foreign newspapers shall reproduce this paragraph, so that friends of the movement who desire to send subscriptions may know that they should address drafts to bir Robert Jackson, C. 8., Sir R. Martin, Bart., or Mr John E. Redmond, M.P., Mansion House, Dublin, as these gentlemen are the treasurers of the Father Mathew Centenary Dublin Committee,
