ANNUAL ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The annual election of school committees in the various school districts in South Canterbury took place last evening. TEMUKA. COMMITTEE MEETING. \ meeting of the retiring committee was held prior to the householders’ meeting, when the report and balance-sheet to be placed before the householders meeting were adop'ed, The members present were—Messrs Gray (chairman), Allan, Storey, Brown, Rutland, and Cooper, MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. The annual masting of householders at Temuka took place last night at the school. Mr K. F. Gray occupied the chair, and about 50 persona were present. The following is the annual report submitted to the householders ; Your committee have pleasure in reporting as follows : (1) Staff.—The school has undergone the following changes since the last meeting of householders; Miss Phillips has filled the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Ladbrooke. Mr Gillespie sucoeeded Mr J. P. Kalaugher, and Mr C. J. Qoldstone succeeded Mr Gillespie. Mr T. Cheyne Farnie has has succeeded Mr H. Cross, and Miss Q. A. Brown has been appointed pupil teaoher, the apprenticeship of Miss Russell having expired. Miss Bruce, of Hilton, has been appointed to the position of third teacher in the place of Mies Brown, who resigned recently. It has hern twice necessary to obtain the services of locum teneus : when waiting for Mr Qoldstone to commence his duties, and at the present time, as Miss Bruce will not be able to leave Hilton until Ist May. (2) Attendance. —The average attendance during the past year has been 5 Boys, 144 ; girls, 135.9; total, 279.9. At the last examination seven secondary pupils were presented, and for the quarter ended 31st March last nine pupils were receiving secondary instruction. (3) Buildings.—The buildings are in fair repair. (4) Meetings. Thirteen ordinary meetings of the caiqmittee have baeq 'held during the past year, at all of v?hich the attendance has heed good. The seven members elected to ■ the committee have continued in office up to' the present time, with the exception of Mr Hayhurst, who resigned in August last, as he was about to leave the colony. The vacancy so caused was filled by the appointment of Mr J. Cooper, that gentleman having polled a number of votes equal to that obtained by the member of committee lowest upon the list at the last annual meeting, (5) Financial.—The committee commenced their duties with a credit balance of S}s £|J, and tbe present amount to credit is £3S|a Id. It may be mentioned that although the attendance of children was larger than at apy previous lima the amount received for fqel and stationery fees was {only £l§ I§j Qd, being considerably less than for soma years, It is to be regretted that parents and guardians do not respond more uniformly to the very moderate demands made upon them in this respect.

(7) Prijja Fund.—n The credit tjilapee of this fund at the commencement the year was £lO 15s 7J ; the sum of £8 Is was expended in prices, leaving a credit of £2 13i 10i, and it yyill be necessary to a conpeit or by seme similar replace the amount expended, The balance-sheet showed the total amount received to have been £63 I6s, made up as follows : —Balance in hand, 9a 9J; incideatal grant from board, £45 10s; fuel and stationery foes, £l3 18a 91; proceeds of concert, £3 17« Qd. The expenditure amounted to £6O ifd, as follows ;—Janitor, £3O secretary, £8; repairs, £4 18s oi'; printing and advertising, £7 14<; coal and firewood, £7 2s ; stationery, £8 J2a ; leaving a balance in hand of £3 9a Id. ‘ The priza fund accom.t showed the balance in hand at the commencement of the year to have been £lO 15s 7d and the expenditure £8 la 9J, leaving a balance of £2 18s lOd. Gfray th'an intimated that would be nece§3ary to elect a new chairman for the conduit of the general meeting, the committee being now out of office.
On tha motion of Mr W. Storey, second'd by Mr Allan, Mr Gray was appointed chairman. Mr 0, Newbury said that prior to nominations being received for the election of a ew committee he wished to protest against any householder standing for election who had children occupying petitions us teachers in the school. The chairman said that there was nothing in the Act to debar such gentlemen from election. Tire following nominations were rethen received :—Messrs W, G. Rutland, W. Storey, P. McCaskill, W. Wills, J. Ytlvin, F. Franks, Q, Mogridge, J. Cooper, 0. J. Newbury, J. Davis, and E. Brown. Messrs Allan, Quion, Vallender, Metson, Gaz*, and Longston declined nomination. A question arose an to the legality of Mr Fraoks’s nomination, that gentleman not being present, and his nominator not having obtained his consent. Mr Franks's name was, on the ruling, struck off the list. Subsequently on Mr Franks’s appearance he was invited to stand for election, but deo'ined. Messrs Salmond and J. McCaskill were appointed scrutineers. The following is the result of the voting ; Votes. W. Storey ... ... ... 57 P. McCaskill ... ... 56 E. Brown ... ... ... 51 G. Mogridge 44. W. Wills ... 38 W. G. Rutland > ... ... 24 J. Ve vin 24 0. J, Newbury ... ... 23 J. Cooper ... 16 J. Davis 15 Fifty householders voted. The first seven were declared duly elected.
VOTES OP THANKS. The chairman moved a yery hearty vole of thatika to the scrutineers, which was untried unaoimoua y, Mr W. Storey moved that a very he>rly vote of thanks be accorded to the chairmao, Mr K. F. Gray, who, he believed, ■vvulß about to leave the district. Mr Gray had been a member of the committee for years, and had always displayed the greatest interest in the welfare of the dis-trict,'—-Mr Gray briefly responded, Oo the motion of Mr Harrison n hearty vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing committee. 6 The meeting then terminated.
NEW COMMITTEE MEETING, A meeing of the commiiee was subsequently held when Mr MoCaskill proposed that Mr Brown be elected chairman. Mr Rutland seconded the nomination, but Mr Brown declined with thanks. Mr Wil's proposed that Mr Storey be elected chairman. Mr Brown seconded the motion, which was carried, Mr Storey returned thanks, regretting that Mr Brown had not seen his way to accept the position, for which he was well fitted by his long experience.
The secretary s,id that the head master had handed him a list of children whose attendance had been irregular.—On the motion of Mr Rutland, seconded by Mr E Brown the mailer was left i u the hands of the chairman and secretary. Mr Ashwell was reappointed secretary at the same remuneration as lust year. The chairman and Mr E. Brown were appointed to sign cheques. it wag decided to hold a concert or entertainment of some kind at an early date, and the chairmm and secretary were requested to see the Lead master on the subject.
It was ogreed to adhere to the third Tuesday in every month as the da'e of meeting.
