TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
A meeting of the directors of the Temuka Caledonian Society was held at the Star Hotel, Temuka, on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs A. M. Clark (President, in the chair), J. Cunningham, D. Henry, A. R. Allan, M. Quinn,. M. Maekay, A. Bisset, E. S. Smith, J. Angland, P. McCaskill, J. Lawson, and the Secretary. After formal business had been disposed of, the programme of the society for the approaching winter season was considered, prior to which the secretary was instructed to write to all members :o£ the society whose subscription are still unpaid, urging them to pay the same within fourteen days. After some little consideration, it was decided to hold social gatherings on May 15th, June 26th, and July 31st, and wind up with a ball on August 28th.
The president said they should not lose sight of the objects for which the society had been started, amongst were study of national literature, the practice of benevolence, the promotion of education, etc., and he thought it would be well to try and arrange gatherings during the winter months, when papers could be read on various subjects. Lectur es might also he given, and he would, for his own part, have pleasure in trying to induce gentlemen versed in various subjects, to address them. A suitable subject, for instance, might be “ The origin of the Celts,” and a treatise, or address, on farming topics, and would also prove instructive and interesting. The president’s suggestion was apapproved of, and he was. requested to arrange, if-possible, for an address or two to be given under the auspices of the society. Messrs Henry, Allan, E. S. Smith, and A. Bisset, with the officers ex officio, were appointed a sub-committee to carry out details in connectioh with the social gatherings. On the motiou of Mr Allan it was resolved that no member be admitted to the][social gatherings without producing the annual ticket of membership. The Geraldine Sports Society, through Mr Cunningham, tendered their thanks to the society for the loan’of material etc. Accounts to the amount of £l7 10s were passed for payment. The question of improving the running track was left to the trustees. Minor matters were attended to, and and the meeting terminated.
