THE IMPERIAL BUDGET.
London, April 18. The Budget has beeu brought down. The estimated expenditure for the year is £86,857,000. leaving an available surplus of £8,549,000. The coinage fund has been restored, and a gold fund created and credited with £6OO 000 arising from mint profits on the circula, tion of silver. The duty on silver pl.te is remitted to the extent of £80,000,' and tfyat on te«» reduced to 4d par lb[ and on currants to 2s per cwt„ a g Greece i 3 making important concessions with reepept to thig latter Article. The house duty is reduced by £540,000,, and there are several other minor reductions. The duty on British and foreign spirits has been increased 6d per gallon, whipb, with the additional beer duty imposed last year, will be handed to local authorities. Proposals are contained in the Budget for reducing the tax on insurance companies and stamp duties ; also for decreasing the volunteer subsidy by £IQO,QOQ. Jt is intenddd to provide £j,2so,QoQto compensate the publicans, and in the meantime a Suspensory Bill will be iatroduced forbidding the issue of fresh licenses except in new districts. The county councils are to get an extra subsidy of £380,000, The Budget is generally applauded. It is estimated that the increased duty on alcohol will yield £180,00.0,
