Sydney, April 16. The topic of the hour is the situation at Bourke. The Darling is still rising and a crisis is expected to-night or tomorrow. It is thought the town will be, sale if the embankment ho ds. The emergency entails increasing Watchfulness, as ihn line of earthworks is three miles in length. Nearly £7OOO has been spent on the embankment. Fortunately the weather is beautifully fine. The women and children, laden with all their worldly goods, are leaving by every train, The loss of slock is enormous, on many stations not a single head being left alive. April 17. The position of Bourke is very critical, as there is a wall of six feet of water all round the town. The embankment recently thrown op sprung a leak to-day, but by smart work it was stopped before serious damage was done. The railway line was cut away to save the lino and the town and embankments. Latest news from Bourke is that the railway line is in danger of being washed away hy the floods. At Walgett the waters are subsiuing, At Brewarrama, where a dam burst, the town is inundated to a depth of four fee', and business is entirely suspended. Several brick buildings are collapsing, in consequence of their foundations giving wuy.
