WANTED, AT ONCE—A SMART LAD. Must be able to read and write well. Apply TEMUKA LEADER OFFICE. 10s REWARD. LOST, from Geraldine, Tuesday, April Bth—BLACK and WHITE SHEEPDOG, “Tyne." Any Person returning the same to H. B. WEBSTER & CO. will receive the above Reward. apl7 GOVERNMENT LIFE INSURANCE DEPARTMENT. AN ADVERTISEMENT having recently appeared in the Geraldine Guardian under the signature of an Agent of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, tending to throw discredit on the Bonuses granted by the Government Life Insurance Department, it is desirable to lay the following facts regarding a c'aira recently paid by this Office in the Canterbury District before the Policyholders of the Department, in order to prevent misunderstandings. The policy in question was taken out under the oldest rates of the Department, rates of premiums which it was expressly stated at the time were not calculated to yield any profit whatever. The policy was therefore almost parallel to a nonprofit policy in the A.M.P. Society. The premium for €IOOO was only 12a 61 per annum more than the non-profit rate in the latter office (or £lO in oil during the 16 years it had been in force), yet the startling result has been that wheieass in the Mutual Provident Society NO BONUS whatever would have been given, the amount paid ever and above the sum contracted for with this Department was ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE POUNDS. The Land-Shakking Mania. The Wellington Evening Press, in an article commenting on a discussion at the Wellington Land Board, says:—“Oar own opinion is that the Land Boards, as at present constituted, are a thoroughly rotten institution, and are actually ug Q . less, it they are not powerless, to prevent eyety kind of abuse in the administration of the Crown Lnds, Government are about to cut up some blocks of very great value and extent in this and the adjoining province, and we are convinced that unless proper measures are taken all the best sections will bo inevitably landsharked, and we call upon Mr Bafiance and the Opposition to throw all their force into compelling the issue of such regulations as shall save the colony from the wholesale robbery of these lands and hair absorption by the wealthy men with their .insatiable land hunger and greed for more and ever more acres. We want such settlement regulations as shall make it impossible for these hungry gentlemen I to swallow any more of the rapidly- 1 decreasing Crown lends of this colony." I
