TIMARU A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

The twenty-fourth annual meeting of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday afternoon, there being present—Mr A. M. Clark (president) in the chair’ Messrs E. T. Rhodes (vice-president) W. Hay, T. Langdon, M. Quinn, J, Dwan, S. Cain, W. Rolleston, R.. Mackay, J. King, T. Hamlyn, R Davie, T. Palmer, E. Kelland, W. Stevenson, J. Struthers, P. Wareing, D. McLaren, S. Higginbotham, and W. B. Howell,

The president read the annual report, which regretted that there had been a falling off in entries in four classes, viz.:—Other horses 15, pigs 34, dairy produce 38, and agricultural implements 44. On the other hand there had been an increase in merino sheep to the extent of 35, and in longwools 3D entries on the previous year. Their financial position was most prosperous, the balance to their credit now being £134 18s sd, as compared with £95 9s Id at last annual meeting. A sum of £42 6s 4d was spent on cattle yards and providing more accommodation, and will appear as an asset. The report then dwelt at some length on the exhibits of the last show, and expressed regret that agricultural products were not as they ought to be, a feature of it, and continued: The hearty thanks of the ; association are due to the following firms and companies for their handsome prizes, viz.:—N.Z, Insurance 0., Canterbury Partners’ Co-operative Association, Messrs Hurst and Son (London), Q-. and T. Young, Aspinall & Co., and the solicitors of Timaru; also to the following gentlemen, viz.:— Messrs A. B; Smith, E. T. Rhodes, A. M. Clark, I. Price, G, H. Rhodes, M. Connolly, H. Pergusson, C. G. Tripp, J. Ballantyne, and W, MeKibbon. The committee felt it incumbent on them on this occasion to appeal to the producers and manufacturers of the district to support the association by coming forward more liberally with exhibits. Why the spirit of competition should be dying out in the district is difficult to solve, and there, is none more favorable to the production of stock and farm produce throughout New Zealand or the Australasian colonies. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts from subscriptions had been £lls ; from entries, £174 13s; moneys collected and donations to the prize fund, £147 11s 6d; gate money, £197 8s 9d; sale of privileges, £BS 12s 6d. Among the expenditure the chief item was prizes paid in cash, £376 ss; other items though numerous were small in amount.

The president was pleased to say that on the whole their position was satisfactory. He then moved the adoption of the report and balancesheet as presented. The motion was seconded by Mr McLaren, and agreed to. Before proceeding to the election of officers, Mr McLaren suggested that, like other associations, they should have patrons. He felt sure that such an action would add greatly to the standing of the association, and would move that MessrsE.H. Ehodes, A. B. G-. Ehodes, and GK T. Ehodes be elected patrons. This was seconded by Mr James King, and carried unanimously. Mr E. Timaru Ehodes returned thanks on behalf of his brothers (who were unavoidably absent from the meeting) for the honor they had done them.

Officers were elected as follows : Mr B. T. Ehodes, president; Mr C. N. Orbell, vice-president; Mr W. Balfour, treasurer; Mr E. W. Stubbs, secretary ; committee, Messrs W. Rolleston, J, ytruthers, E. Davie, 'l'. Tescbemaker, J, Q-oldie, G-. H. Ehodes, W. Hay, E. Irvine, J. King, E, Elworthy, E. Kelland, J. Mitchell, D, McLaren, E. Mackay, A. M. Clark, A. C. Pringle, M. Quinn, J. S. Eutherford, W. Stevenson, G, Talbot, T. Langdon, T. Hamlyn, S. Higginbotham, and J. Campbell. On the motion of Mr McLaren, seconded by Mr Wareing, it was unanimously agreed—“ That a bearty vote of thanks be passed to the retiring president,” Mr Clark thanked them heartily for their vote. He had attended many of the outside shows, and had formed the opinion that the stock shown here was of as good quality as could be got together anywhere. New members were elected as follows; Messrs Eobert Hutton, Beaeonsfield ; George Cocks, St. Andrews ; Thomas Nalder, Upper Pareora; Eupert Parry, Timaru; John Ward, Beaeonsfield; James Campbell, Kingsdown ; H. G. Bristol, Timaru. The rpeetiug then terminated.
