THE PRIMACY DISPUTE.
Ohristchuboh, April 9. Bishop buter had a conference today with the members of the Standing Committee and other leading churchmen. The Dean presided, and read the following telegram from Bishop liadfield to Bishop Harper :—“ As soon as you. forward to me Bishop of Nelson’s agreement with the terms of my telegram—-viz., that he will convene the Synod at an eaidy date at Wellington for the election of a Primate and confirmation of Archdeacon Julius’ election—l will forward my resignation through you.” Bishop Suter made a speech, concluding with the following statement, which he placed in writing “ Having received from Bishop Harper intimation that the Bishop of Wellington is willing to resign his position, upon receipt of that resignation I shall comply with the applications recently made by the Bishops of Christchurch, Auckland, and Waiapu to convene a special meeting of the General Synod at an early date, probably April 24, and at the most central position— at Wellington—for the election of a Primate and the confirmation of Archdeacon Julius’ election to the See of Christchurch.” The meeting passed a vote of thanks to Bishop Suter for coming to Christchurch, for the announcement he had just made, and of sympathy with him in the difficulties which arose over the Primacy question.”
