AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above board was held last night. Present— Messrs E. Lee' (chairman), A. Frew, E. Yallender, and E. Brown. COEEESPOKDENCE. Correspondence was read from the Temuka Town Board acknowledging receipt of £1 7s 6d, refund of dog registration fees. From the Property Tax Department intimating that a voucher for the payment of 18s 9d for one fourth of rates payable upon Crown Lands had been sent to the Treasury. From the same, intimating that a voucher for the payment of £7 7s 2d for balance of subsidy due under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act had been sent to the Treasury for payment* From the Treasury, advising the remitting of the above to the board’s credit at the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka. From the Timaru Harbour Board suggesting that a more convenient way of collecting the present rates would be by their being empowered to make a direct levy annually on the Local Bodies within the Harbour District, the local bodies to bo empowered to raise the amount as most convenient to themselves, with increased rating power conferred on them in proportion to the amount required by the Harbor Board. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating that the following sums have accrued to the board under the
provisions of the Land Act 1885, and Land Act Amendment Aet 1887, viz., from May Ist, 1889, to July 31st, 1889, £l6 15s 3d ; August Ist to October 31st, £5 19s 6d; November Ist, 1889, to January 3lst, 1890, £l3 16s; total, £36 10s 9d, and forwarding a plan up»n which might be marked the roads upon which it was proposed to expend this amount. — The overseer was instructed to furnish information by return as to certain roads in the Deferred Payment Settlement, which the Board decided to improve, and at the same time to draw the attention of the Land Board to the fact that they were not yet in receipt of certain moneys previously accrued.
Prom the National Insuranance Co., advising that the premium of insurance on the board’s cottages was due.— Passed for payment. THE HARBOR RATE, After discussion it was resolved that the Harbor Board be informed that this board, taking into consideration the low assessments of the town district and the number of small holdings which already cause difficulty m the collection of rents, does not see its way to approve of the course suggested. overseer’s retort. The overseer reported that the contractor for cleaning the creek had commenced work, but had not as yet made rapid progress. He had been absent several days, but bad subsequently put on a man in his place. The footbridges ordered had been erected and in each instance cuttings made to them. One man had been employed in all 8£ days in filling ruts, etc., in Denmark, Wilkin, Maude, and Alexandra streets, and at odd jobs. In view of the approaching winter, he asked the board to settle as to whether they would in future have the water tables, etc., cleaned by contract. The overseer was instructed to furnish information as to probable cost of cleaning water-tables, etc., and to prepare a specification of the work required to be dene, with the view of having the same let by tender. He was also authorised to have certain repairs executed at 'lavender’s bridge, Mr Brown drew attention to the state of the footpath in S udholma street, and the overseeer was instructed to report upon the same, ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £lO 7s 101 were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
