A voucher for £3OO, second and final portion of the building vote of last session, was received. Mr West reported that the contractors for the Geraldine School had made good progress with the foundaand most of the timber was on the ground drying ready for use. The site of the Hakateramea school had - been pegged out, and the contractor would begin as soon as the material arrived. Messrs Barclay and Pearpomt reported that, in conjunction with the committee, they had arranged for the temporary housing of the Geraldine
children in the Volunteer Hall, the only building large enough. They recommended that a well be sunk at the new school site, especially as in this dry season the well could be sunk well below the usual water level, which is 20 to 25 feet down.—lt was agreed to sink a well, and to receive the tenders called for by the committee and local members. The tenders were opened:—Kalaugher, 6s per foot; T. Grindle, 6s per foot; J. Keunington 5s 6d per foot and £1 for platform. The latter was held to be the highest, and a lot gave the work to T. Grindle, Mr Barclay reported what had been concluded between himself and Mr Talbot and the Mount Gay committee, respecting the shifting of the school. The committee were willing to bear the expense of shifting the school and providing a site for it, but did not see their way to shift the residence also, If the board sold the present site and bought the new one they would shift the residence, and he, Mr Barclay strongly urged that this proposal be adopted.—Mr Talbot reminded the board of the offer of the committee to find £4io for the removal. He thought they had better put that money into the purchase of a site and removal of both buildings, any excess to be made up from the sale of the present section. He did not know what the land was worth, hut he instructed the auctioneer not to let it go under 30s an acre.—-The matter was left to the Building Committee, who are to meet without delay, with power to act. Mr Barclay remarked that now that a sum had been received from the Government, the case of Seadown should be given favorable consideration.
The inspector submitted a list of teachers who had failed to pass, or who did not attend at the last examination. A discussion took place on one or two cases of successive failures.—lt was decided to take no steps this year in the way of dismissal of four teachers who failed to attend the examination. One of these, however, had resigned in expectation of notice of dismissal, the position had been advertised, and a number of applications received, the resigning teacher not applying,—After a discussion the teacher was reappointed for 12 months.
