GOOD FRIDAY.

Good Friday was kept as a close holiday in Temuka, except as regards the grain traffic, which was unusually heavy. The different ways in which day is viewed by the various sections of the community naturally causes some few anomalies. The quiet appearance presented by the streets, with all places of business and hotels closed, formed a strong contrast to the busy scene at the railway station, where dray after drav was discharging its load of grain. Again the merry picnic or shooting party seemed oddly at variance with the numerous churchgoers. The favorite resort of pleasuremakers was again the Milford lagoon, which was visited by numerous parties during the day. Sportsmen scattered in different directions, the aim of most, however, being the destruction of hares rather than feathered game. Several fair ba«s were made. 65 THE CHHECHE3. At the Eoman Catholic Church the services consisted of the Adoration of the Cross, follewed by the services of the Stations of the Cross. The choir sang “ Stabat Mater.” There was a good congregation. Early morning service was held at bt. Church, as well as at eleven, and in the evening. Fair congregations were present on each occasion. The Eev. T. A. Hamilton delivered appropriate addresses, and special hymns were sung. 1
