Colonel Pitt will be present on behalf of the Government to report. : Jonathan Eoberts' elder brother 1 James was committed for trial at Christchurch on Monday morning on four charges of obtaining money from three hotelkeepers under false pretences, At the police court, Christchurch, on Monday a man named Aliek Prince was sent to gaol for a month, and ordered to find security for £25 at the end of that time, for a brutal assault on hiß wife. The evidence showed that Prince went home about half-past eleven on March 19th, found his wife, who is pregnant, getting the supper, and immediately struck her on both si<?es of the face. He again assaulted her in the bedroom, and°she remained in the kitchen all night. Next day he pulled the bandage offher face and struck her on both eyes and over the head. Afterwards he dragged her by the hair of her head into the bathroom, and threatened to do for her with a knife. She threw the knife out of the window, called out v" murder," and the neighbors inj terfered. Accused's counsel urged 1 drink as an excuse.
