Game.— The finest stag shot for a long time has been exhibited a*-Nelson. Its weight was cwt. It was 7 years old, and its antlers had 10 points. Board Meetings. —The monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board will be held to-day ; that of the Geraldine Town Board this evening, and that of the Lemuka Town Board to-morrow evening Sale at Geraldine. Attention is directed to the sale of sheep, cattle, pigs, etc., at .the Geraldine yards to-morrow Mut l dell & 00., and Messrs H. B. Webster & Go., and Mr A. E. Cox advertise entries, Sculling. —The sculling match between Matterson and Maclean took place at Sydney on Friday, and, contrary to expectations, was woo by Maclean by twenty lengths, the time being 22min 4056C8. ; Matterson at the finish appeared to have nothing left in him. * i

Death op a Jobhnalist.—One of the victims of the-recent; floods in Queensland was Mr J, E. Ileddin, a brother of Mrs J. Ivess. The deceased owned two evening papers, one at Charters Towers and the other at Townsville. Fares to Ohrisschurgh.—la our advertising columns will be found reduced railway return fares to Christchurch, available for a week. R.M. Court, Teknka,— At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Temuka, yesterday, before C. A. Wray, Eeq,, R.M., the following cases were heard : —W. Hooper v. Leonard (native), claim 18*, judgment summons ; adjourned for fourteen days. O. O. Matthews v. W. Mackay, c'aim £4 for service of a mare by Betrayer. Payment had been promised a long time ago. Judgment was given by default for amount claimed and costs, 13s. Illegal Voting Papers. The licensing election for the Peninsula, Dunedin, district was upset on Saturday because the voting papers were not in accordance with the regulations of the Local Elections Act, inasmuch as they stated that five candidates must be voted for or the paper would be informal. One party only nominated four, and another five, and some voters were led by the wording of the paper to give their vote to an opponent.

Football. The following are the names of the members of the Waihi Club chosen to pl iy against East Christchurch in Christchurch on Saturday, April sth Harley, A. Shallard, Kalauaher, M. McLeod, A. Ball, J. McLeod, W. Lewis, H. I. Harte, A. Hart, Brinkmann, A. Stewart, D, Stewart, F. Shallard, and F. Storey. The team will leave the Orari station by the express train on Friday evening, April 4th.

A Runaway. —The horse attached to Mr Frew’s milk cart, while standing at Mr Blyth a gate, Temuka, yesterday morning, was Lightened by the passing of a bicycle, and, turning sharply round, bolted down the main road in the direction of the town. Mr A. W. Gaze, who was proceeding in the same direction, overtook the horse by the Oddfellows* Hall, and catching reins which were fortunately lying over the dashboard, succeeded in stopping the animal before any damage was done.

Flax Dressing.—A trial of ihe Bulls chemico-mcchanioai process of flix dressing was made on Saturday in the presence of the Colonial Secretary, the Minister of Public Works, and a large number of persons interested in the flax trade at Wellington. It is asserted that by this process a ton of fibre i a obtained from five tons of green flax instead of seven as at present, that the fibre is of better quality, and that the cost of production is cheaper.' Those present expressed satisfaction at the trial.

IEMUKA1 EMUKA Rifles. —A special parade of the above corps was haid last night. were present 25 rank and file', Captain Elayluirst commanding. After inspection and Company drill, a meeting of the members was held, and the tion of going into camp at Easter was considered. After discussion, it w>B agreed that the project was not feasib'e this season, as so many men were unable to leave their employment. It was consequently agreed to defer it.

A Scandal.— Defective drainage at the Avondale Asylum, Auckland, which has caused an extensive outbreak of typhoid among the patients, will necessitate an expenditure of between £SOO and £IOOO. At the inquest on one of the victims on Friday, the jury brought in the following “The jury are of opinion that the death of the deceased from typhoid fever, attributed by Dr Hassell to sewer gas, calls loudly for immediate attention to the state of the drainage of (he asylum and to which it is feared more than one will fall a victim.” The Press comments strongly on the neglect of the Government in the matter.

Temuka Football Club. A special general meeting of the Temuka Football Club was held on Thursday last Mr W. Fitzgerald occupying the chair.’ The balance-sheet, held over from the previous meeting, was adopted. A committee meeting was held the same evening there being a good attendance. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. T. M. Hayhursfc, for his handsome donation of £2 2s. The secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the Ashburton Rovers with a view to making arrangements for a match on Easter Monday. Several accounts were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.

Sale of Property.—Mr K. F. G'ay hold a sale of property in Temuka yesterday. His own auction rooms and yards elicited no bid, while the section on which is his private residence was bought in at £340. Two sections in Davis street were bought in at £2l, and the only {.ropeity which sold was four sections in Arr. whenua, fronting on Hornbrook and Qamack streets, which realised £69, Air M. Melvin being the purchaser, ’'[ho house and section at the railway crossing recently owned by Mr Dyson, we 7e bought in at £l6O.

The Tonic Sol-fa System.— Mr Joseph Barnby has been saying a good word for the tonic sol-fa system, and also for choral singing in England. His opinion that greater perfection in this branch of music has bean obtained by Englishmen than by Continental nations was, he said, confirmed by Gound, Hiller, Dvorak, and other foreign musicians. Wills, before noon to-morrow. Splendid Fruit. —We have been shown a splendid peach grown by Mr E. Waddell on his farm near Temuka. It measured 9 inches in circumference and 3 inches m diameter, and was in every respect splendidly grown. We also have seen an apple grown in Christchurch which weighed over 2lb. Treat for Children.—A member of the Timaru School Committee has informed us that, by special request, the Ranway Commissioners have decided to issue io school children return tickets to Dunedin for 3s 6d,' in order to enable them to see the exhibition. Teachers accompanying the children will be charged 6s 6d for the return trip.
