NELSON, MOATE & CO.
it is comparatively speaking within recent years that, large as have been our imports, the attention of colonists has been intelligently directed to the advantages of blending teas. To the firm of Messrs Nelson, uloato, and Co. we owe the introduction into the colony of the system of blending. Nino years ago this firm became established io business in Christchurch. Soon their success warranted them in extending their operations, and at the present day substantial warehouses at which their teas are exposed for sale, are to be soon in all the leading towns in the colony, as well as in Tasmania. They have agencies in every town in New Zealand, East and West, from Russell to the Bluff. Tire way in which their business has expanded has been little short of wonderful, and affords sufficient proof that their goods have met with the appreciation ot the public. As an additional indication of the growth of their trad© it may be mentioned that last year Messrs Nelson Moate, and Co, were the importers of over a fourth of the total quantity of tea, that was landed in New Zealand, eyen when the imports of the large mercantile firms are taken into consideration. Of Indian China, and Ceylon teas they are the largest importers. The firm has so firmly established itself in the colony that an exhibition in New Zealand would hardly be complete, did it not include a display of their blended teas; and an exhibit of theirs can fairly claim to come under the category of a local exhibit, inasmuch as the blending is done in the colony. Messrs Nelson Moate, and Co. claim to be the only tea experts in New Zealand. The blending of tea is said to be a special gift, which cannot be acquired, even with the greatest amount of experience, unless the wouldbe blender has the taster's palate. Mr Nelson is the tea expert of che firm, and was specially trained as a tea blender, ; i; The exhibits of Messrs Nelson, Moate and Co. are contained in three, show cases which uro placed in a row in the avenue between the British and Foreign exhibits. The show cases are large and handsome and are connected with arches. At the apex of each arch there is in open woodwork a well executed imitation of tho firm's familiar triangular-shaped trade mark, with its pyramidal designs in tho interior. The exhibits are neatly arranged in packets and boxes, but open samples of different varieties are shewn. They comprise the four standard blends of Messrs Nelson, Moate, and Go, —the teas that are sold everywhere, and that have been tried by nearly everybody, at tho prices of 2s, 2s 4d, 2s Bd, and 3 s per lb, Then there are the “Jumbo" blends, which are of pure Indian teas, and are quoted at 2 s and 2s 4d. The “ Cingalese ” blends, of pure Ceylon teas, and an assortment of
China teas are also included. There are soma special lines i:i sun-dried flower Pekoes, f'e price of which ranges from 21s a !b ; eun-dried Oolongs, which fetcli from 18s a lb ; and a variety of Congous of all grades. The-Aim also show 10 samples of Ceylon Pekoes, which e.ru all said to be teas of excellent quality, A nother exhibit consists cf 10 samples of India Pekoes, which include some of (he choicest grown. this season one of them, a golden Pekoe, costing 4s in India. Among tbs several exhibits of teas that are made in the exhibition, Messrs Nelson, Moats, and Co. can certainly claim a foremost place for theirs.—Otago Daily Times
