Mundell, Secretary—- - F. Wilson Smit h. FIRST DAT. Contrary (o their experience at the past few meetings, the above club were favored with Queen’s weather for their autumn fixture, winch commenced on Thursday JaitT The a 1 tendance of the public, however, was not by any means so large as could be wished. Toe local Brt-.lers were not well represented by any means, a state of things which m-my accounted for by the fact of a very large number of them having gone off to enjoy a wellearned boiid-.y at Dunedin, after completing the labors of the harvest field. The north and sooth trains brought about 50 people each. Yery few Indies were present. Thecourse wasio good order, dry and fast, but hard, after the long continued spell of dry weather we have had, and with the lawn and erc'osure looked burnt up and. withered. The stand was yery poorly patronised, and the absence of the band did net tend to enliven ma tirs. The police had prohibited any games baiog played, and consequently the usual cries of the racecourse wore missing. One or two ready money bookmakers were doing very light business, but the usual speculators and spielers were conspicuous by their absence. The translations on (he totalisator were, however, fair'y good, , Messrs Mason and Roberts, who had a machine oo the ground, pulling through some £867 in the course of the d ft y. The booths were conducted by Mr P, Kyne, of the Bush hotel, Geraldine, who also had the luncheon rooms, Mr J. Meikle wielded tbe starter’s flag, and succeeded iu every instance in sending bis horses away on fairly tqual terms. Mr T. Teschemaker, as judge, had a not very difficult task in deciding the various events. The stewards succeeded in keep ing everything running smoothly, being greatly assisted in doing so by their capable and courteous secretary, Mr F, Wilson Smith. Mr Dowse is to be complimented on Lis handicaps, even tli e knowing ones failing to spot the winner in the majority of cases. The meeting opened with the Hurdles, for which three faced the starter. Cathedral showed a persistent tendency to run round his hurdles, while Hollywood positively refused to take the first past the stand, and was taken home. Cymaro, who had been fencing well, won as ho liked. For the Novel Flat three out of the five on the card went to the post, Wire Tn appropriating the event without much trouble. The Autumn Hand cap was a boil over, Kimberley wresting the stakes from the favorite, La Rose, after a tough struggle. The veteran Jumbo was in rare form for the Time Trot, and had passed the favorite, Black Pine, by the time he had done his second mile. He was loudly cheered for his excellent performance, which astonished a gcod few who had pinned their faith to the black gelding. The latter, however, appeared to move unkindly. After her running in the Autumn Handicap La Rose still went out'the favorite for the Flying, but Lord Ashton and his stable companion, Red Ensign, again upset the pot by placing her third. Martha upset the calculations
of the majority, and caused some amusement by cleverly winning the Squatters’ Stakes from Quibble, who appeared to hold the chestnut mare rather cheaply. Of the three that started for the Hack Selling Race Wire In was made a warm favorite, and the opinion of the majority was right. The following are the results:— Handicap Hurdle Race, of 20 nova.
