AUCTIONEERS' REPORT. TIMAETJ. Messrs Gracie, Maclean and Co. report for the past fortnight ending Saturday, as follows: Horses—Our entry to-day was again limited, only 18 head coming forward, and of these none were over medium quality. Prices realised a slight improvement on sales of • the past few weeks. We quote good draughts (nominally) £ls to £25, medium up to £l2, hacks and light harness horses, medium to good, £8 to £l2, weeds as per usual. 1 We sold on account of Mr H. Jackson, the trotting mare Nelly, for 29 guineas! Sheep—At Makikihi monthly sale, on 10th March, we sold 200 merino ewes at 4s lOd to ss, 115 2-tooth ewes at 10a 3d. At Winchester, on the 11th, 230 crossbred lambs at 7s. At Washdyke, on the 13th and 20th, the entry of sheep was much larger than usual, and several lines changed hands. We sold as follows:—280 lambs ;at 7s Bd, 44 ewes at 9s 6d, 200 2-tooths at 12s 9d to 13s, 400 4,6, and 8-to6th halfbred ewes at 8s 9d, 350 do at Bs, 104 do at 7s 9d, 27 do at 6s, 30 do at 3s 6d, 250 lambs at, 7s 6d, 250 halfbred ewes at 7s, 300 fat sheep at 10s 6d to 13s, on account of Messrs Miles, Archer and Co., Mcllwrick, T Mitchell, G-, McMillan, J. Grant, W Grant, Gunn, J. R. Gilliatt, T. Kinnahan, T. Hamlyn, N.Z. and A.L. Co., and others.

Private Wales—Privately we have placed 550 merino ewes (sound mouthed) at 5s 6d, 739 crossbred ewes at 7s 9d, 200 fat sheep at 13s. Cattle and Pigs—At all the yards in the district, cattle and pigs have been very conspicuous by their absence, none of any description coming forward. We sold privately 16 bullocks at £5. Skins—The usual fortnightly sales have of late been disorganised, but in future they will be held every other Wednesday, commencing on the 2nd April next. Through the week we have disposed of 900 butchers' and country skins at—for pelts Is to Is 6'd, full-woolled up to ss, lambs' Is 8d to 2s lid, 2374 factory skins at 3s Bd. Pat—All lots readily cleared at up to 12s 6d per cwt. Hides—The price of hides has again suffered a decline. We have nothing to report under this heading. Grain—We have placed several lines of wheat at—for tuscan and red chaff up to 2s Bd, oats Is 2d to Is 3d.

CHHISTCHUROH MARKETS. Messrs James Wilkin and Co. report for the week ending Friday : Sheepskins, Hides, and Bough Pat —At the New Zealand Wool Stores on Thursday we held our usual weekly sale of above. Buyers turned up m full force, but did not seem very eager to buy. Prices, however, remained on a par with last week's rates. Our sales for the week were 437 sheepskins, 26 bags and packages rough fat, and 31 oxhides and calf kins. Our quotations are as follow:—Butchers' crossbreds, large, 3s 2d to 4s • do smaller, 2s 6d to 3s Id; do merinos' Is 6d to 2s lOd; do lambskins, 2s 3d to 3s lid; country crossbreds, 2s 5d to 5s lid ; do pelts, 9d to 2s 8d ; do merinos, none to hand. Pat—We have ; t6.report a-better demand this week. Sound and well-saved realised and if d per lb, shop trimmings etc., Id to Hd per lb. Hides as usual. ENGLISH MARKETS. London. March 20. New Zealand mutton 4fd, beef, 4|d, A portion of the cargo by the Aorangi was spotted and mouldv, and only realised 3£d. I . March 21, i A shipment of colonial vegetables J by the Lusitania has has not realised i enough to pay freight. Australian wheat, ex warehouse, 38a 6d; New Zealand long berried' ditto., ex store. 37s 6d, market quiet. Tallow, best mutton. 25a 6d ; ditto beef, 245. New Zealand frozen I mutton, 4fd. New Zealand hemp is unchanged. Buxton, lionald and Company, wool brokers, have issued a circular in which strong exception is taken to the direct purchase of wool in Australia. They state that the colonial markets yield prices as a rule under the relative European values, seriously prejudicing the Home industrv. They are of opinion that there is little chance of a healthier tone till colonial purchases are absorbed. Choice New Zealand butter realises 90s to 100 s ; fair quality, 74s to 88s, Best Australian brings 104 s to 105 a New Zealand cheese, 48s : medium quality, 28s to 445.
