RIFLE SHOOTING.

The firing by the marksmen of the South Canterbury battalion for the medals offered by the Government took place at the Temuka range on Thursday afternoon last, The Government offer a gold medal for each island for the highest score made, and a gold and silver medal for the second highest score. They further offer a silver medal for the highest score made in each district. The shooting for these medals is confined to the marksmen of the district only. The competition for these medals came off as stated above, but no representatives of Temuka fired. Corporal Stonehouse, of the Geraldine Eifles, is the highest scorer for the South Canterbury district, with a total of 80 points out of a possible 120. The result of the firing in the other districts is not yet to hand, and consequently the first and second for each island are not yet known. The conditions of the shooting were 200, 300, and 500 yards, 10 ten shots at each range, Government targets and scoring. The following were the scores made:—
