Heavy Loss.— The Chmuru Mail repot ts that Mr Hubert Hill, of Otiake, has lost the whole of this year’s crop by fire. It

Chinese Gambling Houses.— Last Sunday tt Chriftehurch and Ttmaru the police made raids on gambling houses frequented bv Chinese. At Timaru sis Chinamen were arrested and at Christchurch fourteen. They made no resistance, although all attempted to escape. The Timaru offenders were brought before two justices peatorday, and remanded for a week.

the exports of New Zealand, states (hat although during the depression existing the producing interests fell into arrears, an”d the exports were absorbed in meeting her indebtedness, yet the productiveness of the
colony has increased to such an extent as to enable her lo pay off arrears, and it expresses the opinion (hut a country that does this out of its own productiveness is essentially prosperous, and with good seasons will not be long before the profit of production will bo shown by increased impoits and stirring business. b
St. Patrick’s Day.—Yesterday being St. Patrick s Day a partial holiday was kept in Tomuka. The banks wore closed, and several of the business places, but there was no organised ufc'empt at holiday making. A number of people availed themselves of the
opportunity of visiting the sports at Geraldine 'chile a few piemoked at the beach, or indulged m fishing. The day was very warm but was rendered unpleasant by a blustering nor-wester, which started at about half-past
ten and continued with little intermission until about 2 o’clock. At St. Joseph’s Church tno services for the day wore hold, arid were wo,; attended. At Geraldine a close holiday
was kept, the day being set opart for holding the annual athletic sports. At these (here was ft capital attendance, and the somn-ul events, as will be seen in another column wore woll contested. *

Oaptuhh op a Sharx,—A large shark earned some Lyttelton fbhemen soma annoy, ance and trouble by getting entangled in th«ir nets on Sunday, and was ultimately killed. It measured, from tho tip of the none to the" root of the tail, 9ft 4in. The circumference of the body was Bfr, tapering oil to 2ft, and tha heed was 4ft 4;n round. The tooth were in four sown and somo of thorn measured kb much aa l£in, The tail from tip to tip measured 34in, The side fins were very large and wore 25in long. A large hook was found in its left jaw, which had worn the akin array aod left a deep mark, There were also a lot ot barnacles on it, and a deep out in the back ■"■'here it had oomo in contact with the kesl of the boat.
Accident. —Yesterday evening a serious accident happened to Mrs Deßenzy, of Hunnington, Wmche-ter, From particular:! to hand, which arc rather vague, it appears that Aha DeEerzy, in company with another lady and several children, was driving from Winchester to her residence, and when nearing Smil.hfleld turning the horse was frightened by tho passing of a bicycle, with tho result that the trap was capsized. Of those in the vehicle Mrs Deßenzy was the only one seriously injured, for it appears that the trap fell on her. She was picked up in an insensible condition and conveyed to her house, where the usual remedies were applied until medical assistance was procured.
