FATAL FLOODS IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

Sydney, March 12. Owing to floods the railway lines are blocked in various directions. Kempsey 'and Smithdown, situated on MacLeay River, are under water, the latter to a depth of 12ft. Boats ani a river steamer have been engaged in rescuiug residents, fully 300 persons took refuge on a dredge in the Lower MacLeoy. All the townships along the banks of the Richmond River are flooded, and Grafton is inundated.

Considerable loss of life has been caused by the floods near Narrabri. Mrs Carr snd three children were drowned and their house washed away. At Taree.. a farmer named McGillivray was drowned, and at Casino a man named Reid and another unknown. At Windsor Mr Dunstan lost his life. It is feared that many people have, perished in tbe northern district. The telegraph lines are still interrupted, but the weather shows sigus of breaking.

The floods continue in the country, and the Government aro sending boats with rations to several places cut off from communication. Ihe Clarence river is higher than in 18fci7, and the town of Grafton is almost submerged, Tbe water in some instances reaches the eaves of large buildings. The flood is now receding.
