HILTON PUBLIC SCHOOL.
The annual treat, distribution of prizes, concert, and dance in connection with the above school took place at the school on Thursday last. The children gathered at the schoolroom during the early part of the afternoon, and were plentifully regaled with good things. DISTRIBUTION - OF PRIZES. The prizes won by the children were then distributed by the chairman of the committee, Mr R. Skinner. The prizes were awarded on the basis of the inspector's examination, and were won as follows : Standard Vl.—Margaret Skinner 1, George Stewart 2, Edmond Beattie 3. Standard V.—Annie Kelland 1, Eanny Kelland 2, Mary Breadley 3. Standard IV.—DanielLeary, Daniel Daly, and Paul Breadley (equal) 1. Standard lll.—John Meredith 1, John Kelland 2, Lizzie Kelland 3, Standard ll.—Ernest Rooke, John Patrick, Eden Leary, and Rose Toomey (equal) 1. Standard I.—Mary Beattie, Patrick Daly, John Leary, Mary Brien, Sarah Daly, and William Earl (equal) 1. Sewing.—Mrs Cochrane and Miss Andrews examiners, Mrs Dunlop being unavoidably absent:— * Standard Vl.—Maggie Skinner 1, Lizzie Beattie 2. Standard V.—Maggie Earl 1, Mary Breadley 2. In this standard the Miss Kellands,two, showed some really splendid work, but did not compete with the other girls, being over age. Standard IV.—Nora Connolly 1, Bridget Earl 2, Annie Breadley 3. Standard lll.—Lizzie Kelland 1, Kate Leary 2. Standard ll.—Lilian Kelland 1, Mary Earl 2, Rose Toomey 3, Kate Leary 4. Standard I.—Mary Beattie 1, Minerva Ineson 2. Class P.—Katie Earl 1, Mary Skinner 2, Alice Patrick 3, Margaret Leary 4. Special sewing prizes were given by Mesdames John Hay, 0. G-, Bradley, J. W. Pye and Steven. A special prize of a book, presented by Mr P. W. Hutton, for the best attendant, was won by Ivlary Beattie, who was never once absent during the whole year. Mr T. Wagstaff's prize for the most popular girl in the school, to be awarded on the decision of the boys, was won by Annie Kelland. Mr IST. Dunlop also presented the committee with a number of toys, to be distributed among the small children, Messrs J. Hay, C. Leary, and W. Patrick also sent donations of fruit. At the conclusion of the distribution votes of thanks were accorded to the donors, and also to the teaching staff. THE SPORTS. The prizes having been distributed, the afternoon was devoted to athletic sports. The following were the prizewinners : Running—Boys over 14, C. Leary 1, John Skinner 2 • 12 to 14, John Kelland 1, James Kelland 2, Jeremiah Connolly 3 ; 9to 12, J. Earl 1, Tom Leary 2, John McKay 3; under 9 years, John Patrick 1, Gus Breadley 2, Con Leary 3. I Wrestling—Boys over 14, C. Leary 1, Hugh Patrick 2- 12 to 14, Patrick Leary 1, Jeremiah Connolly 2; 9to 12, Tom Leary 1, Joseph Earl 2. High Jump—Boys over 14, T. McKay 1, John Skinner 2; under 14, George Stewart 1, Joseph Earl 2. Sack Race (a special prize of a j picture, presented by Mr T. Wagstaff) —John Leary. Girls' Races Over 13, Mary Breadley 1, Maggie Earl 2 ; 10 to 13, Bridget Earl and Kate McKay (dead heat) 1, Nora Connolly 2 ; 8 to 10, Elizabeth Tindall 1, Mary Earl 2, J. Patrick 3 ; consolation, Bella Skinner 1, Nora Connolly 2, Lizzie Beattie 3. CONCERT, The annual concert took place in the evening, Mr R. Skinner, chairman of the committee, occupying the chair. Songs were given by Misses Dunlop, Andrews, Gregan, and E. Meredith, and Messrs Aitken and Cochrane. Musical selections were given by Misses Thompson and Andrews, and recitations by Miss Gregan and Messrs Fergusson and Aitken. A number of the school children, under Mr Steven, also sang some pieces. Misses Andrews and Dunlop acted as aceompanistes during the evening. Votes of thanks were accorded to the performers and those who had assisted. The singing of the New Zealand I national anthem by the children, and Auld Lang Syne by the audience, concluded a most successful concert.
