CANTERBURY WOOL AT THE EXHIBITION.

Ihe Canterbury wool which was exhibited for competition in the late show, with results that must have been gratifying to most growers, is now being displayed in the Canterbury court. It is to be regretted that a larger number o£ growers were not induced to compete, as the success achieved by the few who did exhibit for competition proves conclusively that upon the Plains there are reprepresentative flocks of a very high character, The fact is borne out also by the quality of the fleeces that are shown for exhibition only. Amongst the wool that was deemed by the jurors to be worthy of a prize we notice an exceptionally fine bale forwarded by Mr W. Giles, manager for Messrs Langton Bros., of the Warren estate, East Oxford. By an oversight, the credit of this exhibit was, when the awards published, given to Messrs Bennett Bros. A bale of strong combing merino wool from Sir John Hall's Hororata estate occupies a promiment position. In scoured wool, in which the competition was very keen, Mr T. Yorke, of Woolston, succeeded in obtaining a first class award with a bale of Warren wool. _ _ Among the many varieties for exhibition only that are displayed in the court it is impossible to pass such fleeces as those which are shown by Mr W. M'Farlane, Messrs Mallock and Lane, Mr D. Rutherford, and Sir John Hall, and are exhibited advantageously and in a way that is a credit to the court. The varied show of long wools collected and exhibited by the local committee has proved, and will yet prove, highly interesting to breeders, and the value of these as exhibits is greatly enhanced by the fact that a full description is appended to each fleece. Included in this collection are champioa Southdown fleeces-—both scoured and in the grease —from Mr S. G-arforth's flock at Spreydon, Southdown ewe and hogget fleeces grown by Mr Mathias, and half bred Romneys, Leicesters, and Lincolns from Mr J. Johns' flock. The pure Lincolns and Southdowns are well represented by fleeces from the flocks of Messrs J. Deans and H. Overton, while Leicesters are shown by Messrs J. Johns and J. Haydon. An addition to the Ashburton County section of the court has been received in the shape ot some very fine fleeces of the new clip. A number of fine and strong combing fleeces are exhibited by Messrs Mawson Bros., the Hon, W. S. Peter Messrs J. Lambie, J. Chapman, and W, M. Lyttelton. Ssecial mention deserves to be made of three ram and hogget fleeces, allowing excellent quality, from Mr C. G. Tripp's flock. Leicesters in this section are exhibited by Mr J. Bonifant, halfbreds by Messrs A. Jackson and W. M'Arthur, and first-cross merino and Leicesters —an exceptionally fine fleece—by Mr J. Dent,of Lauriston. 1 heseexamples that have been mentioned, together with the wool trophy of bales contributed by Messrs W. D. Buchanan, &_ Garforth, W. M'Farlane, E. Crowe, Mallock and Lance, and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, certainly form one of the most comprehensive and typical shows ot this staple product of the colony that we can hope to see for manv a fl-ay lhroughout the court there are displayed on the walls photographs and paintings of some of the prize stock that is owned by Canterbury !£ i * and also Photographs of paddocks of growing crops. While it would be an almost endless task to enumerate these pictures, they will repay any amount of inspection that may be bestowed upon them.—Otago Witness. s
