A SMART BLACK.
Sydney, Feb. 24
Tommy Evan, the notorious aboriginal, who recently escaped from prison at Copmanhurst, after shooting Trooper Hadley with the latter's revolver, has proved too cute for the police. They captured him after a great struggle, and a constable, after handcuffing him and strapping him t© a horse, undertook to convey him to the lock-up again. While the constable was riding ahead, however, Tommy got loose, and when the constable looked around there was only a riderless horse. The police had another encounter with him on Sunday night. It appears that he had got to a blacks' camp, and got rid of his handcuffs. The police from Copmanhurst, together with the members of the local Gun Club, went out and surrounded the camp, but on calling on Tommy to surrender he Bprang out from a deserted camp to the rear of the party and made off id the darkness. Several Bhots were fired after him, and one is believed to have taken effect. Tommy was pursued for some distance, but got clear off. The'police are now out with black trackers in hot pursuit.
