Excursionists—lt is estimated that fully 5000 excursionists arrived in Dunedin on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday last. . Archdeacon Julius.—ln a letter to a friend at Christchurch Archdeacon Julius expressed his intention to leave-Melbourne for the Bluff by the first steamer after March 16.
The Dean DEFALCATidys.—The Thames Borough Council have decided to accept £650 in Bett'ement of their claim against the Victorian Insurance Company, as guarantors for F. C. Dean.

Large 1 quantities of fiix and timber have been destroyed, and several sheep belonging to the Waikato Land Association were also burnt.
Recaptured.— Johnston, the prisoner who escaped from Wanganui gaol on the 28th February, was captured up the Wangaehu river on. Monday n-'ghe. He looked little the worse for his adventures, and was sentenced to 40 daya hard labor for escaping.
Direct Trade with Natal.—lnquiries have bean received at Auckland from all parts of the colony respecting the direct trade with Natal established by a firm of shipping agents, and the barquentine Stanley has been chartered;; to leave Auckland for, South, Africa in about three weeks.
Sporting.—At the third day's racing of the Club's Autumn Meetine the Second Hurdle Race was won by Wyvis, Nursery Handicap by Prelude, Autumn Handicap by Scots Grey, Champion Stakes by Melos (Carbine finished third, two lengths behind the winnertime smin 51seo), Special Juvenile Stakes by Titan, and Free Handicap by Pet Qirl
Geraldine Presbyterian Church.— To-morrow the services in this Church at 11 a.m! and 6.3'* p.m. will be conducted by the Rev. Joseph White, of Kelso, Otago, and in the afternoon, at 3 o'clock, tha Rev. G. Barclay will preach a funeral sermon, having reference to the death of the late Mr Angus Macdonald. There will be no services at Hilton or Woodbury. News prom the Islands—The Wamui his arrived at Auckland from Samoa. Business at Apia is at a standstill. Complaints are made about the wrecks which came ashore at Apia in the recent hurricane. They have been left in awkward positions and in an unseemly state. There was a severe gale at Samoa on the 13-h 14th, and 15th Fdbruary, but the only damage done was a alight knocking about of the banana crops. Fire Brigades Conference.—At the Fire Brigades Conference on Wednesday the following eyents were decided : Ladder Rescue, Gisbome 1, Spit 2 ; Life Saving Apparatus, Wellington 1, Taranaki 2; Manual, for five men, Rangiora 1, Gisborne 2 ; Handicap Officers' Race,' Foreman Peake (Gore and Gordon) 1 Sherman (Hokitika) 2, Strachan (Timaruj 3 ; Hose and Hydrant, for two men Wanganui 1, South Dunedin 2. Ori Thursday the Hose and Ladder Event was won by the Spit, the Tug of War (North v. South Islands) by the North, Hose Reel Practice (five men) by the-Spit' Consolation (manual engine for five men) by Aahburton, and Ambulanca (for five men) by Taranaki. This completed the list of events, and the demonstration whs wound up in the evening with a smoke concert.

Te Whiti's Troubles,—The Tarnnaki -ierald says : -" The wife of Te Whiti, the Farihaka prophet (who is serving a sentence of three months in default of paying a debt owing to Mr Stitt, of Opunake) died at the Parihaka settlement on the 25th ult. When the intelligence was communicated to Te Whiti in gaol he appeared to be deeply grieved." Personal.—A private letter written on board the steamer Zaalandia, and dated February 9th, has been received:in.Auckland from Sir Thomas Esinondei He states ihat before boarding the steamer off the Island of Tutuila he enjoyed a cruise amongst the South Sea IsLnda, and he would look back to, that as one of the most pleasant .experiences of his life. He would always'reg'ard his stay in New Zealand with the very kindest recollections.
Railway Traffic Ketwrns. —The railway revenue for 10 months, ended Ist ult., amounted to £893,816, as compared with £830,355 for the corresponding period of the preceding year, tlm beitx* an increase of £63,451. The : expenditure absorbed only 63 per cent, of the gro3s receipts, instead of 65£ per cent, as during last y«ar. The following are the details of the traffic : Passengers conveyed, 2,811,723—an increase of 156.869 ; parcels, etc., 341,078—an'increase of 5280 ; live stock, 801,889—an increase of 67 125 • goods, 1,704,470 tons —»ii increase of 79,280; minerals, 653,500 tons —a decrease of 36,334 tons.
Hilton School Committee.—A meet--iny of this committee was held on 28th February, 1890. Present Messrs R. Skinner (chairman), W. Beattie, P. Ryan, J. Kelland, and O. G. Bradley. .. Corres-? pondence wa3 r-ead from the Board of Education stating that the sum of £4 12s 6d incidentals had bean passed to the credit of the committee. The committee decided to record their vote in favor of the Rev. Thomas Jasper Smythe, and Messrs W. B. Howell and R. A.' Barker as members of the Board or Education. The school treat and prizes were discussed, and the meeting adjourned till 3rd March.—At the special meeting it was decided to have a concert in the schoolroom on Thursday. March 13th, ihe proceeds to be in aid of the prize fund'.
Appeal.- At : the Supreme Courf, ChriHtchurch, on Tutirsd.>y, Mr Jnstice Deonistoun gave judgment in the appeil case Greaves (appelant) v. Sutherland (respondent). In this case, which wjs an appeal from th« Resident .-Magistrate's Court, TimarH. His Honor said "the sub stantial question raised by the apps.,l waß whether an appeal under The Destitute Persons Act, 1887, for the support of ho i legitimate child could he made referoepec'ive. The Magistrate he d that he had no power to make an orJer. The putative father had refused, after the death of the child,, to pay certain expenses incurred for past, maintenance and expenses incidental to the birth of the child. His Honor hold that the provisions of the Act were intended to ipply to future payments, and that the present Act did not contemplate n le'rospective ordar. The order, therefore, could not be made retrospective, aud the appeal would be dismissed with costs, £lO 10s. The claim against Sutherland, it will be remembered, was mode by (ho Sou'h Canterbury Charitable Aid Board.
Magic Lantern Entertainment. —A. pleasing and intellectual entert i-iment was given io the Volunteer Hall, Temuka .hit evening by the R».va. A. Thomson (Paten), and J. Dickson (Temuka). entertainment consisted of the exhibition by means of a mior ; c lantern, of a number of Eaypt ani P»le 3 tin6 and (he New Hebrides. There were also choice views of Ireland, and a number of scenes descriptive of tha ; " Collar's S.iurday Night." The descriptive narrative, or rather, the brief-explanation of the various views, was to the pom*-, and of an indenting character, and those present, ait-hough comparatively few in number, g AVei f* e queintestimcnybytheirapplau.se of the onterU:nmeot provided. For the amusement of the yoimger portion of the audience some well conceived comic sketches were shown, the effect of which was heightened by mechanism. Taken altogether the exhibition w,.a the best of its kind yet given here.
Outdoor Amusements.—On Thursday evening Ternuka residents were treated to do less than two outdoor acrobatic dis p'ays, to, the no email; delight of the juveniles, and to a f..ir section of adults At of the Terauka Motel Madame Vera Fredo, a lady gymoast, assisted by a troupe of four, gave an acrobatic display that would Dot haye disgraced a decent circus. Madame Fre io's performances on the trapeze and alack wire were first-class and elicited rounds of applause. The tumbling, trapeze, and other acts by the different members of the company, and the feats performed by an educated doa were also well worth seeing. The entertainment wound up with a most amusioff f..rce entitled " That old hut." The collection made resulted in a very poir return not Dearly enough to pay expenses, and the proprietor very plainly pointed out the injustice and hardship of persons goin« to bis enttrtainment, and then negleeliog to contribute anything ihurefor.
