ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.
Melbourne, March 3,
A contractor’s truck, containing thirty men, was derailed near Hamil-' ton, owing to its running over a bullock. Seven of the occupants, named Waiters, Stanley, Dillon, O’Brien, Dumphy, McG-ee and O’Donnell, were killed instantly, one being completely decapitated. Others were seriously injured.

A sad accident happened at Waverley beach yesterday. A party went to sea for a bathe, when a boy named Kirk got out of his depth. His brother went to his assistance, but was carried by an under current on to the rocks, and, it is presumed, got entangled in seaweed! A youth named Robinson went to his assistance, but also got entangled. Both were drowned. Only one body has not yet been recovered.
Westpobt, March 3
While putting a blast in a hole in the tunnel, at Cape Foul wind, the dynamite exploded, injuring Connors, the man who was doing the work, dreadfully about the head, and it is reported that he is not expected to survive. A doctor and a priest have left for the scene. A man named John Harris committed suicide th ; s evening by shooting himself through the head. A rent collector called on Harris, who went into bis bedroom, lay down on the bed, and shot himself, the bullet entering his mouth and penetrating his brain. The deceased, who was a carpenter, had been drinking. He was single, aged fifty, a native of England, and an old resident of Westport. Eeeeton, Maech 4.
A young man named Alfred Bryan was drowned in the Inangahua river yesterday while bathing. Cheistchtjech, March 4.
A man named Frederick Jones, and a woman named Jane Lee, with whom he cohabited, have been arrested at Southbridge, charged with cruelty to Lee’s son and daughter, aged six and eight years respectively. The children show marks of very severe treatment, and the boy has a serious scalp wound. The man and woman have been remanded till Friday. They formerly lived in Dunedin.
Mr Henry Keane, landlord of the Scotch Stores Hotel, died suddenly to-day. He was formerly president of the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers’ Association, and was at one time president in Auckland.
