The Bank of England opposes the j printing of one pound notes. Mr G-oschen will push the Bill in Parliament, despite the bankers' protests. Mr H. M. Stanley, the explorer, put his terms at £6O per lecture. A lad, thirteen years old, reported to the Exeter police on February 6th that his father had stabbed his wi\; to death with a pocket knife, whue the lad stood by imploring him to spare his mother. The father then cut his own throat before his son's eyes. An investigation confirmed the story. The Bishop of luam, Ireland, died on January 31,
A scandal similar to the LondonCleveland affair has been dragged from the depths in Belfast. Twelve youths wera arraigned on February 4th, and other arrests are expected. A secret society has been discovered in Ireland against Smith Barry, president of the landlords' syndicate, and other landlords. They are to be boycotted, and a systematic obstruction made to all their business.
Messrs John Reed and Company, the big London ship-building firm, failed on February 3rd, with heavy liabilities.
A London despatch of January 16th says that Mr John Ruskin, the leader of English literature, is hopelessly insane. His mind has been gradually giving way for seven or eight years. The first public suspicion of the fact occurred at Oxford, in 1886, when after delivering several lectures he broke down during one, became incoherent, and greatly exercised the feeling of his sympathetic audience. He ventured no more there, and the matter was hushed up. He went to France, and after spending some time at Amiens proceeded to Florence on a visit to Miss Alexander. He then seemed to be in good health, but at Venice he had an attack and he broke down mentally. In November last reports reached London of his having had a violent paroxysm, during which he smashed the windows in his room. Since then he has been in bed and continuously refused all except liquid food, aad he manifests no desire to get up. He is steadily growing weaker, and the probability is that if he ever leaves his bed he will never go out of the house again. Cardinal Pecci, brother of the Roman Pontiff, died on February 7th of pneumonia.
Russia has ordered two large ironclad frigates, built in England, to be provided with the largest engines and heaviest Kntpp guns. Four of the greatest firms of Europe estimated for the contract, but the Czar insisted that the ships should be built in England.

Cholera is raging in an epidemic form in the Caucasus.
The Jubilee Plunger, Benzon, now in prison at Nice, has broken down completely. According to a despatch from that place, of January 30th, he weeps bitterly in his cell, and is unable to secure his release, and professes extreme penitence. The trial of his case has been postponed. The Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia is dying slowly of cancer. He has gone to Nice, seeking to prolong his life.

An explosion occurred off Margate on the morning of February 7th on the warship Barracouta, during a boiler test. Two were killed and ten wounded.
Professor Bokai, of the Klausenberg University, Austria, claims to have discovered a certain antidote to hydrophobia, consisting of a solution of chlorine, bromide, sulphuric acid, and permanganate of potash, with oil of eucalyptus. The steamer La Plata arrived at Antwerp, from Buenos Ayres, on February 4th. Specie and bonds valued at 1,250,000 dollars were missing, -.:, f it i 8 supposed they were stolen during the voyage.
