FOOTBALL.
WAIHI.
The annual meeting of the Waihi Football Club was held in the Mechanics' Institute, Winchester, on Saturday evening, March Ist. A large number of members were present, and Mr T. L. Hart, last year's captain, occupied the cbair. The chairman, read the balance - sheet, which showed the receipts to have been £lO 3s, and the expenditure £7 Bs, leaving a balance of £2 15s. He considered this good, and all present were of the same opinion. The number of matches played by the club was seven, of which four were lost, two won, and one drawn. The election of officers then took place, and resulted as follows: Patron, Mr A. E. Gh Ehodes, M.H.R. ; President, Mr E. Wakely; VicePresidents, Messrs R. and H, Smith, Cunningham, Ellis, and Ensor; caytain, T. Hart (re-elected); vicecaptain, F. W. Shallafd; selection committee, A. Shallard, W. Brinkman, D. Stewart, and the captain and vicecaptain ; general committee, Messrs D. Stewart, Brinkman, F, Harte, Wakely, and Carston ; secretary and treasurer, F. W. Shallard. It was resolved to have only one delegate to the Rugby Union this year, «td Mr J. P. Kalaugher was elected to fill that office. Mr Cunningham last year promised a hat to the member who scored most tries during the season. A discussion followed as to who should be the possessor, as H, Wakely and T. Hart were even. However, Mr Hart, in a few suitable words, resigned his claim in favor of Mr Wakely, who, although a very young member, had played a plucky game, and fully deserved the hat. Mr F. Harte offered a trophy of the value of ten shillings "for the member who scored most points, and Mr D. Stewart a similar trophy for the forward- who secures the most tries during the coming season, Fees were fixed as follows: Honorary members, 5s ; first fifteen members, ss; second fifteen members, 2s 6d. A long discussion followed as to what foreign Club it was advisable to play. Some wished to go to Dunedin at Easter, as it would be a good chance to see the Exhibition, but as several members had already paid that city a visit, and did not care to go again, that idea had to be abandoned. Finally it was decided to take a trip to Christchurch, and play one of the clubs there at Easter, meeting an Ashburton team on the way thither. A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
The first practice of the above club was held on the afternoon of the same day. About sixteen members joined in the game, and sides were chosen by the brothers Moore. The ground was rather dry, which had the effect of slightly disfiguring some of the players' faces. A. Shallard and T. Hart played a good back game, the former's quick, dodgy runs being a treat to see. ]?. Shallard played with some of last season's form, his collaring being good. Brinkman, A. Bell, J, Northam, and Wakely also played well. The team, though light, are fairly fast, and with plenty of practice should give a good account of themselves during the coming season.
