Brisbane, Feb. 28
Mrs Elizabeth Hyde has been convicted on a charge of murdering her husband by poisoning his food with strychnine, and sentenced to death.
A man named Barry beat his wife to death with an axe handle at Rockhampton yesterday. The assault was committed intermittently for some hours.
Napier, Feb. 25
John Slater, tailor by trade, aged about sixty-five, was found dead in bed at his lodging this morning. An empty packet of " Romgh on Rats " was found in his pocket. The deceased had been drinking of late. At the inquest this afternoon the medical evidence showed that death resulted from fatty degeneration of the heart, the deceased having been much addicted to drink, and though a box of " Rough on Rats " was found on him he could not have taken much, if any, as the stomach showed no signs of it,
Christchurch, Feb. 28
A boy named Laurie, 8| years old, was drowned in the Avon this morning, near New Brighton. He went for a bathe with his brother and got out of his depth.
The North Otago Times records the accidental death of Patrick Cagney. Deceased was in the employ of Mr M enlove, Queen's Flat, and on Friday evening was drawing water to the engine of a threshing machine with two horses and a dray with a tank attached. It is supposed that deceased was riding on the dray and that he fell off, the wheels passing over his body. Dr G-arland was sent for, but Cagney expired three hours and a-half after the accident, and before medical aid had arrived.
