THE LABOR TROUBLES.
London, Feb, 21. It is understood that Lord Salisbury declines to discuss the advisability of ho'ding a conference for the purpose of considering a proposal to shorten the hours of labor.
The Emperor William expresses annoyance that his recent decrees on the labor question have failed to satisfy the Socialists. It is expected that the Berne Conference will be abandoned if the Berlin programme goes beyond the question of mines and strikeß.
Sydney, Feb, 23
The threatened strike of journeyman bakers, on account of the employment of non-union men, hns been only partial. Wellington, Feb. 23.
The presetit employes of the Petone Woollen Factory have, at the suggestion of the company's directors, decided to form a general union of workers in the woollen mills of the colony, to be called the New Zealand Woollen Operatives Union. Fifty.nine men and 27 women have joined in Wellington. The Typographical Association voted £lO to those employes who have been locked out. Christchurch, Feb 23, Some threshir.g machine owners in the Kaiupoi district refuse to pay the wages demanded by the Labor Hnion, and a strike or lockout is probable.
